What are the chances???

:
11 MS3 Sport
What are the chances, that the Mazda CX-7 and the Acura RDX have the same engine?

Both have:

2.3 Turbocharged 16 liter 4 cylinder.
Acura claims iVTEC. Mazda claims direct injection and VVT
Same if not near HP/Torque ratings..

And i'm pretty sure the 6speed auto tranny is the same that's used in the Ford Edge's, and Ford got that from GM.

Technology sharing at its finest??

Meh, it was a thought. The two are insanely close in engines.

And the Ford Edge does have a 6speed auto that was designed from GM.

The big news is that the Edge is one of the first recipientsalong with the Lincoln MKZof the new corporate 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Although this shares its basic, dual-overhead-camshaft V-6 layout with the anemic 3.0-liter fitted to the Fusion, Freestyle, and Five Hundred, this is effectively a new engine, with the potential for capacity increases in the future. Displacing 3496cc, the V-6 makes 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission thats a joint design between General Motors and Ford. Strangely, this transmission doesnt feature manumatic shifting. Edges can be ordered in two- and all-wheel-drive form.

Correct me if I'm wrong if the edge and cx-7 have the same trans.

"The CX-7 has the same turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine as the revvy MazdaSpeed6 - although the CX-7 version is detuned to 244 hp. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard traction control and dynamic stability control systems keep the wheels from spinning. The CX-7 seats five; there is no third-row seat available.

"Other shared parts in the CX-7 include the front suspension design from the Japan-market MPV and the rear suspension from the Mazda5 minivan. The rear differential, active torque coupling, and prop-shaft components are similar to those from the MazdaSpeed6, although they are not the exact same design, said CX-7 program manager Shunsuke Kawasaki."

Right, I know the MS6 shares the engine, but I was saying since Ford and GM joined on the trans, who's to say that Mazda and Acura didn't share the 4 cyl engine?

CX, what's the chassis based off of on the CX's? The Mazda 6 right?

nope. The engines may appear similar, but honda developed that engine on their own. The RDX is going to be their test bed for it, and hopefully if response is good, it'll be further deployed into future models. Pretty neat engine too... as is the 2.3 disi. Honda's has some better turbo technology featuring dual veins if I remember correct...

Chassis, I believe, was based of the Mazda 6, but it's not the same... it started there and then changed. Rear suspension is based off the Mazda 5.

I believe the transmission is from Aisin.

Well, I guess the question boils down to, whats stopping anyone from buying an Edge over a CX-7? Besides certain small amenties. Its the same car. And personally, I'm a little skeptical of Ford's involvement, I want to steer clear of Ford and their garbage.

Seems most have had no problems and love the CX-7's agility and sports car feel (which I dig mostly, over the Edge).

But ultimately, the problems and stuff could be 1st year jitters, which makes me nervous as a interested buyer, or evidence of Ford's quality in general.

From what I know (but I've done less research on the CX-9), there are some big differences "under the hood" and the CX-9 shares much more in common with the Ford Edge than does the CX-7. The CX-9, if memory serves, uses a Duratec 3.5 Liter Ford Engine, AND uses a Ford Transmission. While the CX-9 may look like a bigger, plushier CX-7, they are really two very different vehicles.

I think, but I'm not sure, the the CX-9 is also only going to be offered/sold in America.

Well i'm hoping with the release of the CX-9, that more CX-7's will start to come over from Japan, newer and fresher in terms of design and upgrades to the flaws. I would assume that it would. I could be wrong. Its that pre-purchase skepticism, and my fear of getting another troublesome, problematic vehicle.

I just looked it up... from Automobile Mag:
"...Moreover, the six-speed automatic (from Aisin, not Ford) has such refinement that you feel only the 263 hp of the Ford-supplied 3.5-liter V-6, not the shifting."

Not sure that's right (you can find conflicting info EVERYWHERE), but assuming it is, I stand corrected ;)

I don't blame you for being nervous. It made me nervous to buy a first-year vehicle, without a doubt. And I know I'll be royally annoyed next year when the 2008 comes out already with iPod support - LOL! All I can say is that so far I'm very pleased, and most complaints I've read have been pretty minor and resolved fairly quickly.

LOL and here's that conflict I talked about...

"The CX-9 is the first Mazda to use the 3.5 L Ford "Cyclone" V6, called the "MZI" in Mazda guise. Mazda claims that the MZI will generate "more than 250 horsepower", and Ford has announced that the same engine will produce 265 hp (198 kW) and 250 ftlbf (339 Nm) in the Edge. The CX-9 will also use the Ford/GM 6F automatic transmission with a console-mounted shifter in a complex Mercedes-Benz-like gate." (from Wikipedia)

Well, regarding the Aisin trans..

GM and Aisin designed the 6 speed trans together, and originally started using them in the 2007 Pontiac G6. That was their plan to start utilizing that Aisin trans. (BTW, I've been to Aisin Corp. in Michigan here, its an absolutely amazing office, and everyones really nice! - also went to their test track and it was amazing!)

So I think from there, Aisin maybe made a deal with Ford/Mazda too. But news reports are gathering it was from GM since GM first started using it.

But yeah, I talked with my friend last night and we came up with the determination that there are only 20% of car owners who actually visit forums, so therefore you're getting feedback from a very small group of people, based on issues and stuff. The other 80% are just people who drive back and forth everyday and never have or see a problem. Its better that we know about the problems, as car enthusiasts, but with buying the new car, all I can hope for is the best, and if anything happens, we can get it resolved.

Helped reassure me a little, atleast lol.

While GM and Aisin may have designed a 6 speed tranny together, Aisin is a Japanese company. They are considered the "tranny specialists" by many, but also design other car parts. They are the ones that have really brought us the CVT used in Hybrids (includes the Lexus), but they design parts and systems used by just about EVERYONE.

Car n Driver: The Edge relies on Mazda 6 architecture, and the Mazda uses some Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 suspension layouts as well as the Mazdaspeed 6 engine, but much of it is unique.
