Used engine fitment questions

I have a 2002 Protege sedan 2.0L manual trans that needs a motor. Can someone fill me in on the Nuances between motor options I'm finding as I try to sift through used and reman engines? What's the difference between the 8th VIN digit of 5 and 6? Is this sedan and P5 or something else? If so will one not work in the other for any reason? Also everyone wants the M/T vs A/T specified for search. Is there a crank or bell-housing difference or something between the two that would not allow just swapping a flex plate for a flywheel and installing? Thanks in advance for any info.

You can just swap the flywheel, pilot bearing and clutch for the autos flexplate.

Ive used manual and automatic engines as replacements in a mazdaspeed protege.

If you are installing in a mazdaspeed you will want to swap the windage tray and oil cooler setup the msp onto the regular fsde.
