Hi all,

The dealership is trying to install my cams this morning. they took the pieces out of the packaging and thought that they were both Intake cams. They now can't tell which one is which

Is there anyway to tell which cam is the intake and which is the exhaust. Markings on the cam or anything like that?

PLease help!!!!!!!!

Ok I have the cams in, though I had to leave work to make sure it got done right.

Here's the low down:

The intake and exhaust cams are the cams from the J-Spec MP3. The intake cam is fine and marked with a I to indicate intake. The exhaust cam is where the problems start. The exhaust cam is made by taking a blank intake cam and grinding it to exhaust cam specs. As a result the exhaust cam is also marked with an I, hence the problems at the dealership.

I called Brian at Mazda Motorsports and he said without the proper part numbers it is virtually impossible to tell the difference. You would need to measure the lobes to figure out the difference.

After running down to the dealership and explaining the issue we managed to get them installed with no further problems. They were really nice about the foul up and gave me a great deal on the labor.

So I'm now less stressed and panicked then before.

Thanks everyone for their help. If anyone is thinking about installing the cams please remeber this tip and don't mess up the part numbers.

I think Brian also said that they will no longer be avaiable due to the fact that the parts have been discontinued. Not sure if this is true or not but if you want the cams I would suggest trying to get them ASAP.

My exhaust cam has both a dayglo orange and blue stripe on the hex part approx. the middle of the cam. After looking at the part number I discovered I have the "hot" cam. the last 3 digits are 440 with no suffix. It appears that there were two cams from the sport 20 and mine is the earlier one. It's supposed to be a bit hotter than the later one as it has more lift. It can cause surging during cold starting which is why they discontinued sale of it here. I got it last March just before they changed over evidently. The newer one has 440 then a dash and a suffix number.

Guess what, same thing happen here. Well sort of. I bouhg both cams from a nother memeber, and I want to make sure he got the right cam in the right box. The part numbers on the box are
ntake: FSH9-12-420
Exhaust: FS9p-12-440A

On the actual cam it says:
FSH9 IN on both

On one it has a pink stripe going all the way around it with a "1" written on it and an "e" and a "p" on the hex nut thing near the middle of the cam and a pink dot in the middle with a "3" written on it. It also has a green stripe by the part number.

The other cam does not have any strips on it but does have a "1" written near one end and "26" written on it with an "8" and an "A" on the hex nut near the middle of the cam. It also has a pink dot in the middle with a "4" wriitten on it.

With this description, can anyone tell me for sure which cam is which? With what Traveler said, I would think the exhaust cam is the first one I described. Please HELP!!

unfortunatly my experience is that you need to trust the part numbers on the box. I asked about being able to tell which is which and was told it's virtually impossible.

As someone mentioned you might be able to measure the lobes but at the end of the day we're not talking about a big difference.

I would just go with the part numbers on the box and hope for the best. I would check mine but I don't really want to take off my cover to check :(

Good luck

It is actaully pretty easy to tell the difference. Put both cams together and the dowel pins facing straight up. The cam that would be facing the firewall will be the intake cam. The cam facing the front of the vehicle ( the radiator) will be the exhaust. It is no harder then that. Also the exhaust will have a extra hole due to the dowel pin having to be moved to make it a exhaust cam. I have another thread a long time ago that expains the difference due to corksport sending me to intake cams on my order.
