Updated Service Bulletin Coolant Leaks Nov 2024 read this!

Maybe posted but I could not find. I experienced the Cylinder head crack causing coolant leak. Mazda just extended this TSB campaign to 10 Years or 120k in November 2024. Mine happened this week on a 2017 cx9 GT. Fully covered with a loaner to boot.

Hi I have a 2016 CX-9 and had a coolant leak at the cylinder head in 2019 at around 70,000 miles. Mazda did a complete engine replacement for free. Now i have a 150,000 miles and have the same problem on the new engine. Has anyone dealt with this? I currently have a claim with Mazda experience and they are determining whether the extended limited powertrain warranty of 10 years of 120,000 miles applies to the new engine or the original engine that was replaced. I am looking if anyone had a similar experience to see if mazda did a second repair. This is absolutely crazy, the replacement engine did the same thing at almost exactly the same mileage.

I'm trying to figure out if the 10 years or 120k applies to the new engine replacement or the original engine. I just had this happen a second time at 150,000 (I got a full engine replacement for the 1st time this happened around 74,000 miles).

Probably not going to find an answer here, at least for a while. Since Mazda just recently announced this extended warranty, there may be no examples yet of Mazda covering a 2nd replacement. I don't recall seeing anyone else on this forum encountering a 2nd failure and there's many threads over the years on the issue.

Thanks for the response I just got an answer from Mazda the warranty is from date of original purchase they aren’t covering the second engine.

Sorry to hear. I was curious if they would. After I got mine replaced, my dealer said the new block was covered for 1 year for defects. Wasn't sure if this new campaign would change that. Looks like you got an early replacement in which Mazda hadn't fully fixed the issue and just gave you the original design.

The entire situation is ridiculous. Literally the 2nd engine went at the exact same mileage as the first after 75,000 (first engine 75,000, second engine 150,000 miles). I spoke to the class action lawyer who believes I will get type of compensation. But for now they aren’t covering it. They replaced my defective engine with the same defective engine.

Interestingly enough, mine went at around 75,000 and it seems to be the average from what I've seen on this forum.

What adds to the difficulty of your situation is that this repair now exceeds the value of your CX-9 by a decent amount. My long block replacement (not whole engine) was billed at over $8,000. A '16 CX-9 with 150K is worth about $6-7K with a good engine.
