So I broke the 3rd/4th gear shift fork and pulled the tranny to replace that. Got the fork replaced and the tranny back together. With the tranny still out of the car shifted through all the gears and everything worked fine. Got the trans back in the car and everything hooked back up, but the trans still empty and everything worked for a moment. Then it stopped going into all the gears. Got the car on the ground and trans filled with fresh fluid and started it. Shifter moves freely in neutral but when the clutch is let out it goes backwards. any other gear than reverse stalls it.
Did shifting it without fluid in it move something out of place? I'm pretty stumped. Read that miatas have a very similar common issue that is fixed by pulling the reverse switch and manually wiggling the reverse rod in the trans back into position. But that is a completely different transmission, but maybe it's a similar issue.
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Going back to the garage tonight briefly and was going to disconnect the shift linkage and make sure the trans wont shift with a screwdriver through the T-piece right on the trans.
