it all fell yesterday by itself. i rent and my landlord is tellin me that its my fault for putting too much on it? is there such a thing? i mean i have always seen and kept closets really packed because i like having a selection of tshirts

No, it shouldn't matter. I understand that wooden dowels can hold an infinite amount of weight.

It is that crapy wire shelving isn't it? I had the same thing happen, those things can't hold much weight. Unfortunately we found out the hard way.

yeah it is. actually we just found that whoever installed it crooked. by about 3/4 of an inch.

this is currently the main suspect

depending on how many supports that mount to the wall there were, yes, your clothes could have caused the collapse.

typically these bad wire frame racks have 1 maybe 2 supports that got the the wall and hold up the front of the shelf.

whenever I install shelving like this I always way over brace these things so it wont happen.

yeah, its long and only has 1 support

what ever happened to those wooden ones? :(

that only had one support?

suprised it lasted as long as it did.

The wooden poles are fine but the issue is the same, more than 1 center support is needed otherwise you'll get the same outcome.

When you put is back up, put one in the center in a stud(as close to center as you can) then but another close to the center in each half into a stud. You wond have to worry about it again.

Chances are either the support let go at the front from the weight or whoever installed it didnt mount the support into a stud and it ripped out of the drywall.

I always mark the studs and mount a 1x4 to the wall screwed into every stud then mount the shelving to that. Put vertical pieces coming down from the 1x4 mostly to serve as spacers and mount braces to them, preferably over studs, one every other stud. You can use my closets for a jungle gym.
