Tires on Mazdaspeed

Ok, besides the colors, I got one more complaint about the MSP

Tires!

I hate bridgestones. I had various bridgestones over the years, and they are utter crap. They are loud, s**** in the rain, and last like 1 good summer.

Having said that, I have never owned a set of RE040's. I basically gave up on Bridgestone a few years ago, and swore I'd never buy another. Is this another tire from Bridgestone that I'm going to have basically replace after the first summer?

I compared the Dunlop SP9000 that came with the MP3 to the RE040's. Overall, except for road noise, I am happy with the Dunlops. And get 12000kms, they are still really good. I know tread ratings are not written in stone, and differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Dunlops have 280, and the RE040's have 140? Yikes! try tirerack, the re040's don't measure up.

Anyone got experience with these tires and can compare them to the Dunlops?

Don't know of this link to tirerack will work

Hey..
i'm glad you brought up this topic, because i'm worried about these tires too...i'm hoping it's not another bridgestone tire that only last one good summer...after lapping and autocrossing.
I believe the retail on a one RE040 is $140us? that's alot of $ for rubber.
At home, we have a '00 Honda Prelude and it came with Bridgestone RE92's. I believe they are the same tires that come stock on a WRX and Maxima. We've been to a track once, twice at a drag strip and so normal driving most of the time on public roads. The car now has over 48,000Km's on they don't hold well anymore.
It's horrible in snow, and it's not good in rain. On dry pavement, it holds up ok, but i wish they were better.
I don't know about Dunlops, but i'm sure that Yokohama's/ Toyo's are pretty good!

I'd like to think that they're good tires and for $161 a piece they better be damn good. I bet if you were to put Toyo T1-s on the MSP, that car would handle a great deal better.

i personally can't wait to burn through them and get a a set of khumo MX's. also i'm putting on my yokohama A032R's as soon as i get the chance to get to the track and find out how well the car really sticks.

hmm.....I have been considering taking my Proxes T1S off of my rims that are for sale and selling the rims with the brand new potenzas....this discussion makes me think its a good idea.....i luuuuuuuuv my proxes. Had to wait like 2 months to get em during the summer and they were well worth it.

Well the tires that come stock on the MSP are the STICKEST tire that bridgestone makes.

So if Dragracing and handling is SUPER important to you, you'll keep em, and you'll end up replacing em once a year atleast.

with a 140 treadware raiting, going to even the Pole S-03s would be a step down for 1/4 mile performance.

Well, if I do buy the car in Dec. I won't even use them until May. So, I might take them off the rims, and sell them and get something better. Anyone want to buy some brand new Bridgestones?

Everybody just about covered my opinions on Bridgestones. Had a set of Potenza's on my old RX7 when I first got it. Dry handling was fine, wet and winter handling was extremely dangerous, and the tires lasted less than 6 months with driving that wasn't too overly aggressive. I'd never purchase another set ever again and if I got a car that came with them stock, I'd replace them. Just my opinion.

Two things:
1. These are high performance dry pavement tires. I predict they will be wretched in the wet, cold, and snow. Mazda built a performnace car and they put the best performance tire they could get with their current supplier's contracts. It reminds me of when the Acura NSXs came out and everyone was getting 6,000-9,000 miles out of the tires. High performance rubber on a high performance car. Granted, there were some alignment issues with the rear suspension that Acura addressed, but the tires still had very short life spans. If I were buying an MSP, I'd budget for new tires within 20,000 to 30,000 miles (individual driving habits will experience different milages).
2. The last set of Bridgestones I had were a set of RE930s I bought for my old Saturn coupe. They lasted less than 40,000 miles of almost exclusive highway cruising and were not that great in the wet. They were better than the Firehawks that came on the car, but not as good as the T/As that were on it when I gave it to my Brother-in-Law. I have since gone back to my beloved T/As for high performance all season tires for replacements. Jim

Damn man, if you can get any performance tire to last 40k miles, you must drive like an old woman. I barely got 11,500 miles our of my factory Dunlops on my MP3 and that was with pretty aggresive driving. The longest I had heard of anyone getting the SP9000 to last was 29k miles.

Yeah, the little old lady from Pasadina! I've spent enough time on the track to know how to conserve tires and yet go quickly.

The RE930s are supposed to be an all season performance tire. Those 40,000 miles were on the highway at a steady 70-80 mph. They should have gone beyond 40K. Jim
