My father offered to buy me new tires which I would be stupid to turn down. He has a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season tires picked out, My uncle that works at discount tire says they are pretty spiffy with their carbon fiber reinforced sidewalls and such.

So first and foremost are they good tires?

And second what size should I get? They aren't showing the same size that I have in the potenzas but they suggest a 225/40r-18.

I'm completely clueless on this topic so any help is greatly appreciated.

225/40/18 will fit the stock wheel nicely...but they will be shorter (less tall) than the stock 45 series tires. It will throw off your speedo slightly.
In addition, you have to be very cautious to maintain slightly higher pressures in the 40 series tires since there is less sidewall to support the weight of the car.

You can get those in the stock size. They are a special tire made for the C6 Corvette. They are also run flats. If you are worried about the fit go with those. They are Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S-C. Hard to find info for, but they seem to exist.

225/40/18 tires are only a tiny bit shorter than stock (about 0.4"). That only throws the speedo off by 1.3 MPH at 65 MPH. Also, since the sidewall height is only affected by 0.2", I don't think tire pressure will need to be adjusted.

According to Tire Rack, the 40 series tires can support the weight of our front end, but tire pressures need to be closely watch to make sure the tire does not over-heat and blow (borderline spec range).

I am only forwarding information Tire Rack has given me when I bought my 225/40/18 tires. There is a significant different in height when I compared my stock wheel/tire (18x7 w/215/45/18) to my racing set (18x8 w/225/40/18) side by side. The stock wheels/tires fill in the wheel well gap while the 40 series made it look like my car was lifted.

Just FYI... My 0.02 cents worth...

you will be fine

Very good tire

Yeah 235 is too wide for stock, but would fit nicely on my RX8s.

Definitely go with anything 235 or larger on RX-8 wheels. I just bought a set of 225/40s for my RX-8 and the tire width is too narrow... I am thinking 235 borderline...but more like 245 for a perfect square wheel/tire look. Though I don't think we can run 245/40 or 35 on our cars.
