Stream Music via Bluetooth?

I have a 2008 CX-9 and although you can connect your phone via Bluetooth, you can't play music. I was wondering if there was a workaround to allow this?

I'm currently playing music from my phone through the AUX connection, but I was hoping for something wireless.

No way.
Our BT lacks "profiles" that support music streaming, which takes dual channels.
Phone call only needs one.

I have no issue streaming music on my 2013. I dont even have to hit a button when i get in the car. It automatically recognizes me, and starts right up. My wife's phone works also. I think it has like 6 different profiles.

Yeah, I think that's a difference between the older models (like the two '08s above) vs. the newer ones. Back in '08 Bluetooth hadn't taken off yet for audio streaming, so A2DP and multi-profiles weren't a thing yet. That, and car companies are late on the uptake anyway, so it would be more like 2006 technology, lol.

That's what I figured as well, 08 Bluetooth technology is just old enough to exist, but not have the same functions as todays Bluetooth.

Alternate question, how difficult would it be to replace the entire console unit with a newer model? I find that I don't really use it except as a screen for the back up camera, and even then the resolution isn't great. The GPS is old and non-intuitive and it doesn't connect to my smartphone.

It's not hard at all to replace. It's actually a standard Double-DIN set-up under there (which is nice, most newer cars are going the fully integrated route). You would need a harness to connect the car's harness to the aftermarket radio, and search youtube for how to pull it out. It's not too intensive with the proper tools (trim-tools that are no-scratch are a must!).

You could go to a website like Crutchfield to check out "What Fits Your Car" and what's out there. Granted, there prices are closer to retail (i.e. higher than other places), but they include a lot of installation gear, instructions and lifetime tech support.

I would head that route even if that required wire modifications. Nav on SD card plus audio streaming would be enough encouragment.

Could be possible, but to address one of your "pros", the Nav SD card is remotely located on the driver's left, below the lighting adjustments/lift-gate panel, so there could be additional wiring and complications.
