Strange loud noise, when shutting off after long drive.

This happened three times already in the past 2 days. its been very hot here lately (100+), and after a long drive i park the car and let it idle for a minute or so to cool down. Right when i turn it off, from under the hood comes this loud winding down noise, as if turbo is slowing down its rotation, but bearings are not getting enough oil, for the lack of better comparison. The fan stays running for a while which is normal, so that is not the noise i am talking about. Noise that concerns me is much louder and only lasts 3-4 seconds. Anybody heard anything like that? Any ideas are appreciated.

After you shut the car off it makes a variety of noise which are normal. The thorttle body will open and close which makes a whining noise. Condensation from the ac lines will drip on hot parts and make a sizzling noise. Something in there will beep after a while. I'm sure it's normal.

Lol, Thanks guys.
I am still inder 1k on my ms3, so all those noises are new and unususal to me.
Guess if anything bad is happening, i got warranty.

You may be describing the fan staying on when shutting off the car. Does that on hot days. Did the same thing on the Mazda6s we had.

Fan staying on is normal and i hear it, however the noise i am describing is MUCH louder, and much shorter in duration...

if your watercooled like our cars, the coolant cycles through the turbo after teh car is off. it creates some kinda vacum or something that cycles the coolant to cool off the turbo as it cools down. makes a kinda whrrring wooshy sound for like 5 secs or so.

Yeah, its natural. My dad has a Saab that makes the same noise after he shuts it off.

I've never heard the sound you described. The car is under warranty. It costs you nothing but a little time to call your dealership and ask a service advisor what they think.

My brother also has an MS3, so i asked him today, and he said that he heard same noise on his a few times; also after a long drive on a hot day. Thank you for all your responses - i have officially stopped tripping about this issue.:D

make sure u wait couple of min after a long drive b4 u shut off ur car.... i would get a turbo timer...but i cant wire for s*** unless it comes with those cramps or w/e u call them... even then i get nervous...

1st time i attempted to hard wire my radar i blew a couple of fuses lol

on a watercooled turbo, turbotimers are not needed. and u dont have to wait a few mins. just stay out of boost for 30 secs and your golden. unless u race alot and shut it off right after boosting hard then u dont need a timer.

really? i read my manual when i take dumps and it said to wait a min after a long drive for your turbo

I am sure turbo timer at the very least will not hurt. I had it on every turbo car i owned, and for this one i am getting blitz w/boost gauge. For now though i usually wait 30sec to a minute before i shut the car off after a long and / or hard drive.

no, it wont hurt, its just not as necessasary as people make it seem. id rather spend the 200 on go fast parts.

Agree,
I am getting mine not just for the tt feature, but because its a boost gauge as well, and i do not need a special pod for it, as you would for the gauge. For $110 shipped, i think its a deal, plus its just a neat gadget, and gives me something productive to do on the weekend.(thumb)
