2003.5 Black Mica Protege5, 2001 Black Z28
Hi Guys, I know I havent been around much. Been learning about how best to mod my LS1. :) But i wanted to start a thread and ask how everyone's engine build is going. I know there are a couple of guys on here with engines in progress. Josh, Installshield, twilight, xelderx, me, anyone else?

Just to let you know, I havent given up on the P5, even tho I bought a Camaro. My holdup has been Paeco (my engine builder). I delivered my shortblock to them in Feb, for new pistons and rods (compression 11:1). Well, they are apparently waiting for my rods. Have been for a few months now. :( Needless to say I am becoming a little bit impatient. But I think 5 months for work on a block is a little much.

As for engine management, I am leaning towards the Microtech from Turfburn. Everyone else headed in the same direction? I know Twilight is.

In summary, how is everyone elses project going?

Not so good on my end. In February, I bought my 1990 GT as a winter beater, and had to fix a few things on that car to get it roadworthy. I also entered the FIA Canada sactioned CASC-Ontario Region SoloII series, which consists of 11 races. I did 2 races in my 93, where because of engine mods, was in an extremely uncompetitive class(FSP), considering it had poor suspension(Monroe Sensatracs suck). I just bought some new 17s. I was out driving with my cousins, and I was showing them some advanced shifting techniques and shattered my clutch in a 2-1 heel-toe downshift at redline. The clutch was on it's way out anyway, so now I'm going to do the whole lightweight flywheel and stage 1(I hate that term) clutch thing. I'm also going to rebuild my spare tranny with a Mazdaspeed LSD, 3rd Gen 5th gear and new 1st and 2nd syncros.

My 93 GT is off the road, as I'm just going to let it sit as I do these repairs. Since I'm still doing autocross, I race my 90 GT in H Stock, where it's a much more competitive car. The thing is, I'm spending all my money on this car now. I just bought some Hoosiers, which I hope to have for next week. Even though this car is in a much more competitive class, it's still 3-5 seconds off the class leaders who all have Kumho V710s. To help even more, I'm going to get a rear anti-roll bar and some Tokico or Mazdaspeed struts.

So needless to say, my engine build isn't going at a pace I'd like. I'm hoping to have the 93 on the road before next spring, when I can finally have my header made and get a stand-alone installed before I continue work on my other engine.

David, how did your head turn out? Got any pics?

haha Josh, I just realized I dont have any pics of the completed head. And it is back at Paeco so they could cc the chambers to get my compression ratio correct (at least I think thats what they were doing with it). Cant believe I didnt take any pics of the finished product.

Oh well, sorry. Damn, not like me not to take pics.

I know what you mean Josh. Modding cars is a huge money pit. Since I cant really do much with the P5 right now, I have been buying stuff for the Z28. Already spent 500 bucks on it (front strut tower bar, sunshade, and Magnaflow catback), and Ive only owned the car a couple of weeks. Addictive. :(

Well as I am not so knowledgeable as everyone here i shall start my list. Well I started off by doing some exterior mods and thhen the suspension. I have Espelir springs and Tokico HP's. I also got a set of 17 in rims to go along with the setup. Then I decided to get an exhaust. So now I have a Megan Racing catback. While i was installing with a friend we took most of the stock plastic intake off so now its just the air filter back for an intake. Now in the mail I have a MAM catted mid pipe comming in tomorrow, a MSP shift knob on wed, and a OBX header for hopefully later on this week. I also have a front manual AWR motor mount just sitting to be installed as well as a hood prop kit. That is all I have done for now as far as n/a and i am unsure where to go next with the car. I am thinking of getting a K&N typhoon intake but besides that I am stuck. Any advice would be nice. I am thinking of possibly getting a cf hood as a next mod but I am unsure. I am also considering powdercoating the headers white to give my black p5 with white rims more of a white theme but i dont know really. any ideas?

I moved to the darkside. Found a cheap Spool stage 1 kit. Getting here at the end of the week :)

On hiatus until I move and as long as I get this new job. If I do get this new job, expect a lot of changes, very quickly.

hopefully i'll be having the microtech fitted on the weekend of 6-7 august and tuned shortly after. appart from that and finally getting the rr-racing udp installed, that's it for performance mods for my car.

there's a huge 4cyl ohc 6cyl and rotary drag racing/show/sound meet on 17&18 september which i intend to race. if you're interested check out www.jamboree.com.au for details. anyway, i'll be running in the sport fwd class and hopefully i'll do well assuming i can keep my consistancy up (it's a DYO category)

car is in the hospital at the moment (shhh) and once that's complete, once the MT and UDP are in, my car is officially complete. dont know if i'll ever get around to the IM mod i was planning because baby is taking up a lot of my spare time and work sucks (doesnt it always).

This is Sad?.....what happened to the NA Enthusiasm..."Oh I'm gonna Do this, and this And ........"

I guess it is better to just go FI eh...very sad indeed to see this

I am going n/a i just dont know where to go next with the p5 and n/a. i dont care if i make less hp then turbo i just care about reliability. and seeing as how i am a college student with limited funds, and not enough for a new block in case of a turbo blown one n/a is just right for me!

Well, if you must know what I have in store for MY car...

I have a set of 11.7:1 compression pistons sitting on my shelf, a new headgasket, and the head is still on the chopping block. The ITB's are completely done, new, lighter rims are in the plans (8ish pounds each), along with a new set of tires. A lightweight flywheel will follow, once I have some money, along with a lightweight crank pulley, and some minor exhaust tweaking.

I'm still in it, I just don't have the money for the ECU or any of the other stuff that I want right now, and will need before I go much further. Once I have the money, yeah, but 'till then, it's all on hiatus.

I generally don't post much on it, because it's still in 'waiting for ECU' mode.

I'm pulling my motor again in the next week or two. My race motor is burning way way way to much oil. I'm not sure if the machine shop got the bore a little too big or if I goofed up the rings some how. I have 3 FS blocks in the garage and 5 cylinder heads so I should be able to put together 1 good motor. once I get a good motor in the car I'm going to the dyno to tune the MPI.

NA doesnt' really mean reliability. as soon as you mod extensively (valves, rods, pistons, etc), reliability goes away. there's a fine line I think. Just enjoy the ride getting to your goals for the car and it will be a more fun experience.

I'm pretty much done with mine. Did the VTCS removal and am very happy with the performance now. I just need to do something about the oiling system.

But I'm also building another N/A motor that should be around 300HP. 96 Explorer motor, new factory assembly line motor. The explorer motors are nice because they have cast iron GT-40 heads (better flow and slightly larger valves), and a GT-40/Cobra style intake manifold. I'm putting in a larger cam and heavier valvesprings and putting it in the Country Squire. That car is getting the motor, gears and LSD, suspension upgrades, BBK, exhaust, regeared automatic transmission, stall converter....etc...it's the weekend car. Waiting for a few parts to come in. I've spent 4700 bucks in the last month, about 200 bucks a day on that car. (including buying it) It's awesome.

well if i get my first real job sometime soon, i might start moving along somehow... I am very much of a newby but i think my next set of mods will include a spare engine, engine stand and some more tools. Also i wanna invest in some books.... Then once i recope from buying a new engine i will start actually working on it.... but i am not really sure when all that is going to happend consedering i do not have a garage....

So i've done very little and all of it can be seen in my sig... Also i am not sure if insteand of an engine i should invest in some sort of engine management.... what are your opinions NA gods?
