Stalling... rattling...

I have an '03 MSP with 75,000 miles, fairly stock except for injen cai as far as I know. I bought the car a year ago and have not done any modification except re-powdercoat the rims.

Lately when I clutch hard to make a corner or to stop quick, my rpms drop out, lights dim battery light flashes and then it usually recovers after almost stalling on me. What might be the cause of this?

I had it in for an oil change the other day and one of the techs said that exhaust flange on the turbo was loose, I have had a bad rattle for quite awhile but could never figure it out. Is this something that I could fix or would it be better to take it in to a shop?

Mine is doing the exact same thing. I also intermittently get P0171, vacuum leak. I have a couple cracks in the exhaust manifold that I"ll be patching up until I get the scratch for a new one. It's only started since it's cooled down here in Texas.

I've read in a few places that it's vacuum/exhaust leak related. But this is my 2nd post so don't take my word for it :P

I'll be underneath tonight replacing the motor mounts and will report back what I find.

i heard egr valve can cause this also your wastegate could be worn out try getting an atp one if your still using the stock wastegate

If your lights are dimming and it only happens when you are doing something that puts g-forces on the car then I would suspect the battery may be loose or something. A loose turbo bolt would not be something that I would consider an issue causing the engine to want to stall when you stop hard. sounds electrical

im having the same problem but it happens when i hit boost then push in the clutch right away, the rpms drop way low and then it revs back up again. the battery light and check engine light flash for a split second then its fine again. its getting mildly annoying.

I had a P0171, it's a lean code. Replacing the WGA and exhaust mani studs/gasket fixed it.

P0171 is back intermittently. I picked up a new WGA which I'll put in this weekend. Do I really have to remove the radiator hose? lol

^ I have had this problem and I put on a new wga and fixed a vacuum leak, which fixed it. A bad wga is pretty much a vacuum leak. I would check all the vacuum lines and wga, check for whistling also. Someone else probably has some more solutions also

I swapped out my WGA friday night. Driving saturday I guess the eclip broke b/c the rod came off of the WG, lost all boost. I guess I have to crawl back underneath tomorrow and put a new clip on.

i had this problem, but it was because i had my maf on my intake and apparently if u run the blow off valve open atmosphere then the maf cant properly read air flow.. so i relocated it in between the tb and blow off valve on my cold pipe and it fixed it..

I pulled the whole manifold and turbo assembly when I replaced my wastegate, I don't know how you did it without. Which WGA did you go with?

I pulled the IC line to the turbo off and removed the J pipe underneath. I was able to get one one of the nuts off from above, the other below using an extension and a U joint. To put the clip on I used a set of 15" curved pliers to get the clip there. My room mate then used a LONG screwdriver from above to push it on.

I didn't get a fancy one, just a cheap non-oem replacement.

Did u fix the problem?? Still having a same problem getting a Cel code P0171 I check my vac at idle -22inhg, full boost at 8psi atp wga. I just cleaned the egr valve, MAF and intake filter, Flashed msp ecu. It happen after the turbo install on my P5...any other suggestion???

The ATP? I had to replace my exhaust mani studs and gasket so I pulled the whole assembly when I replaced the WGA. It was a pain in the ass so I can't imagine trying it with everything still in place. Did you reuse the stock vacuum lines? Do you have a vacuum block hooked up?

check the intercooler piping too...the bad plastic ones tend to come loose and throw cels and drops rps too...

+1...this is it...and this will fix it

I just got the $65 one from protege garage. It wasn't too terribly difficult to install it. Getting the old one off was a pain, just ended up mutilated the old one to get it out due the the adjustment screw.

I replaced all the vacuum lines from the manifold to the BOV and WGA.

Cool cool, I haven't seen many other MSPs around and i've never seen a blazing yellow in person, I would love to see it sometime. Mine has some fresh key marks from a crazy ex-girlfriend but it looks good otherwise.

On a side note, have you looked up what number it is?
