2003 Spicy Orange Mazdaspeed Protege
I am in need of some help with an issue I have had with installing my SS AFC PSC1-020E for the Mazdaspeed Protege. I am not able to get my computer to connect with the ECU (the error message says not able to connect to the ECU). I have the 9 pin serial to USB and have installed the prolific Serial to USB driver (I am running Windows Vista), but when I put the car to on (not running) it seaches for the ECU connection and then the R4 program freezes while Windows is telling me to close the program. (I am using the correct port as well)

I know I connected everything correctly, but I just cannot get the SS AFC to connect to the ECU. I am thinking the AFC unit works since my car runs fine with it still wired up.

(If the SS AFC unit didnt work while still connected, would my vehicle even run at all?)

Is there any tips you may have on how to get this to connect to the ECU? I checked all connections and soldered everything. I just for the life of me can not get this to connect to the SS AFC.

Thanks,

Nathan

Make sure its a USB 1.1 cable. It doesn't work with a USB 2.0 one. Also mine had a tough time running on Vista so try running it in Windows XP compatibility mode and see if that helps. Lastly it probably isn't anything to do with you wiring but it could be the settings that are present on you COM Port in your Device settings. Just make sure everything is the same. (seems obvious but sometimes its just a small thing).
Let me know what happens.

I'm lookin for the same answer. The exact same thing happens to me. I'm about to try a different computer running XP to see if it does anything. Good luck man, I'll let you know if it works with XP instead.

Thanks everyone, I will try to get a new cable. It seem when I try to connect when I turn the ignition to the on position, the computer starts going crazy like its trying to hook up but cannot and then the R4 program freezes up. I will try the new cable. Would my vehicle even run if the AFC box was dead considering you have to separate the MAF wire and the o2 sensor wire? I just want to make sure I am good there because it seems to run fine.

Update!

I have figured it out!!! It was my cable! I went to radio shack and got a Giga cable (brand) that is made for Vista. It comes with software on a CD. I installed the software and plugged the cable into the computer and then the SS AFC. I selected my port (4) then went to the R4 program and hit connect and BAM! Tough actin' Tinactin! Works like a champ. SO...... To all VISTA USERS, its all in the cable!!!!! Get this cable at Radio Shack or wherever. It sucked it was $40, but it worked. Hopefully this should put all Vista problems to rest. By the way, what a difference the SS AFC is with the stock supermap. So nice...

Thanks again everyone,

Nathan
