SRT-4 intercooler

OK, I get different info everywhere that I look, so I want to get it straight once and for all:

1. What are the dimensions of the stock SRT-4 intercooler? (I have seen 23.5" X 5.75" X 3.5"). Including end tanks? Inlet/outlet size?.

2. Will that fit an MSP (besides the obvious need for pipes)?

3. Is the stock SRT-4 intercooler "bar and plate" or "tube and fin"?

4. What is the CFM?

5. What is the pressure drop?

6. What is the temp drop?

I know that all of these questions can't be answered, but I'd like to think that some can. I know this was talked about a long time ago, but I have yet to see someone use one. I read once that someone had it fitted on their car, but that was then end of it, and I can't find that post anymore.

I want pics, if possible, and any info about getting one of these to fit a Protege.

I would check out the srt forums to answer some of those questions for you. As to whether it will fit or not I have heard mixed opinions but im pretty sure it will fit I dont see why it wouldnt.

the only one i know is that its tube and fin. I would not recommend that ic just because you are going to have to do significant cutting to the bumper and supports to get it to fit.

Well lets put it this way. I have a 24x6x3.5 ic. If the above dimensions are correct it will fit with minimal cutting. But just by eying the thing I think its a lot bigger than that. I could be wrong though.

Yea I would go with a spearco core over a stock srt4 intercooler. You can find them on ebay for cheap and you can pick the dimensions that are best for you.

No doubt that I would go with a Spearco or other proven setup first, but when I can get a barely used SRT-4 intercooler shipped to me for $170, it makes it very tempting to toss the stock SMIC...

The SRT intercoolers are being used up to 500 whp so does it matter if it is B&P or T&F? I can measure mine for you, brbr...

BTW you can get them for around $100.

Without taking off the bumper, it looks like 30 inches overall wide and about 7 high. Should fit, just rework the endtanks. It is tube and fin BTW.

But in reworking the endtanks, won't you loose efficiency?

All you'd really have to do is take the rear outlets off, weld them up and put them on the ends. Pretty simple, 99% of radiator shops could do it. I wouldn't worry about the loss of efficiency, otherwise then you'd want to go to a Bar & Plate aftermarket one.

Cool.

I love learning stuff :D

where would one get the hard pipes by themselves? Would hi-boost or Ion send you just hardpipes or would I have to go custom?

I would also like to know about that. But I am sure that they would probably still be pretty pricey. On the other hand if you were just to buy the pipes from say ion/hiboost, you would just be as wise to order the whole kit. B/c of the fact that tbolts and couplings can add up really fast. I did a custom hardpipe set-up on my stock ic and the couplings and tbolts added up to be around a hundred dollars. (shrug)

I don't think they would fit right. You would be better off going custom, it's not that difficult to make pipes.

Britt

Custom piping is what I would do, since who knows how close any of the other kits would be to matching up correctly. Thanks for the great info, Britt!

Making custom pipes is not really that easy. There a lot of specific bends or welds you need and to do them right and look good its not that easy.
