Hey everyone, I plan on changing the oil on my 06 speed6 today if I could find the right socket, but so far pep boys only has 76MM with 14 flutes and various other sizes. Went to 2 autozones and 1 strauss and all 3 use a different sizing info, sort of socket A-F but non have the MM and flute info on it. Also tried my closest mazda dealer but they keep telling me they dont sell tools, which I"m sure is bulls*** but I dont have a part number to ask them to look it up. Can someone help me out with this? what socket letter number should I be looking for? where else can I look for it? Does the filter casing get tightened to the point where you cant remove it by hand? I remember in my old subaru wagon I could screw and unscrew it by hand and still be tight enough to not leak, same with my protege.

I wanna try it by hand, but I'd have to remove the oil first so it wont leak if it does unscrew, but if I do drain the oil and then cant remove the filter casing, I'd would have to put in new oil with the old filter and I dont knwo how much of a good idea that is.

s***, sorry for the drawn out post.

I have one at home that I use with no problems. I 'll look later today.

One cheap solution would be to buy the oil filter bottom plastic piece. They are about ten bucks from mazda. Then go to autozone and test fit the filter wrenches to see which one you think fits the best.

Plus if that plastic piece ever breaks you have a quick replacement!

I bought the 76/74mm with 14 flutes from Advanced Auto. It worked fine. Now don't get me started on the fact that I already had one to work on my 87 Supra. As a matter of fact, if you go to a Toyota dealer parts counter and ask about the oil filter socket for an 87 Supra, you'll get the right tool.

Now I need to get rid of the Supra.

anyone got the part number of the socket if its at all possible to buy it from a mazda dealer, or maybe the part number to the filter casing. I dont wanna go back to the dealer and have them either tell me they dont sell it or dont have it.

Steve, did the one you purchase say both 76/74mm? cause the one I saw at pep boys only said 76mm, I was thinking that it most likely would fit pretty nicely since 2mm I Dont think would make that much a difference, specially since I"m going to a higher size. I guess it wont hurt getting one tomorrow since its only $3.

Anyways, any more info will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the one I purchased said both 76 & 74 mm. The socket tapers in at the top. The cover for the filter housing is not that long, so I think the 76 mm part of the socket is what is actually gripping the cover. I have seen a website that says the cover is 74 mm and another that says it is 76 mm. Maybe I'll think about having a caliper with me the next time to give the definitive answer, but I'm pretty sure you'll be good to go with the 76 mm socket from Pep Boys.

Thanks steve, yeah thats what I went with yesterday. 76mm and it worked, felt a bit loose, as in when I was loosening the casing it actually locked into the socket, not so much where it wouldnt come out, just had to apply a little force to remove the socket from the casing. That engine bay cover on the bottom is a pain though, why couldnt they just add a sort of locking flap where to access the things from, I'm sure it wouldnt have been that much more money.

i left that pesky cover right off lol. and i have this same problem with the filter socket, except i actually drained my oil before i realized i needed that socket. so changed the oil without the filter. but its only been a couple thous give or take 100 so i know it'll suffice for a bit till i get another weekend day off...
