2012 Mazda3 i touring sedan
Hello everyone,

Just got a 2012 Mazda3 i touring sedan. It's great, but I was pretty disappointed by the sound quality. I couldn't get the bose because I'm tall and the sunroof tends to make me not fit. The stock system is muffled and boomy without much clarity or quality.

I've done a fair amount of searching, but can't find the specs for the included head unit anywhere. I'd like to replace the speakers, but I'm not looking to do anything fancy or particularly loud, so I don't want to install an amp if I don't need to. Does anyone know where I can find this information for the 2012? I'm trying to find a good match on speakers, but that's hard to do without knowing the outputs from the head unit.

From what I've read on the 2010, it looks like I'll need 5x7 (or 5 1/4) speakers for the door and tweeters for the upper part of the door. 6x8 for the rear door. Is this right?

Thanks,
-Colin

Hi Colin,

You are absolutely correct about the quality of the sound coming from the audio system - terrible!
I got the 2012 MAZDA3 i Touring 5-Door SKYACTIV-G about a month ago and I am constantly adjusting the limited controls I have at my disposal to make the sound bearable. I often find myself adjusting the treble and bass as soon as a new song comes on the radio.

Please let us know how it sounds after you replaced the speakers.

I am not looking for “anything fancy or particularly loud” either and I wonder if anyone here has experienced much improved sound quality by just replacing the speakers.

I also wonder if the problem lies exclusively behind the head unit while the speakers are actually decent. Any thoughts?

A new set of speakers will absolutely make a huge difference in the sound quality. It is possible to have decent sound from the stock system without adding an amp or sub. Do keep in mind that if you are wanting good lows, you should consider a sub. I would check out http://www.crutchfield.com/g_400/All-Car-Speakers.html. Crutchfield has good prices, excellent customer service, and include everything needed to install the speakers (wiring harness, and instructions for removing interior panels.)

I must respectfully disagree. I've owned 6 cars, and the stock, non-Bose system in the i Touring is, by far and away, the best stock system I have ever had.

i got a 2012 mazda 3 i touring and i have no problems with the sound in it. i added an amp and sub thats it but thats because i like loud bass

The factory system sucks and I have bose. I just added the eonon 8" navigation (about $360 on amazon) and it got a lot louder, but it distorts more. I will be looking into a 5 ch amp and new components on the doors + and 8" JL or something small for bass
