Sound Quality of 6X8 vs 6.5 round

I've decided that I'm upgrading my speakers and adding a 4 channel to my 5-door. HU is going to stay stock since I want the stock look when done.

I was contemplating Phoenix Golds or Infinity components and noticed that Infinity has both the 6X8 and 6.5 round and thought it'd be easier to go 6X8 since there would not be a need to fabricate a plate to mount a round one on. Is there a sound quality difference in the same speaker between the two sizes. I would guess the surface area of the driver is about the same but there might be some drawback to an oval shaped driver.

BTW the goal is to have a "clean" and detailed sound, not the loudest and retain stock look when all buttoned up.

Many people tend to lean towards 6.5's when it comes to sound quality. Thats not to say 6x8's or 5x7's sound bad. Some people will even say you can't really notice a difference. My suggestion is to go to your local shop and go by ear. My personal choice is 6.5's but to each their own.

I doubt anyone can really tell the difference between the 6.5 and 6x8 version when it comes to sound quality. The 6x8 version has a slightly larger cone so it may produce more bass if anything.

The reason many go with 6.5" speakers is because there is a greater selection to choose from. Go into a store and listen to a bunch of speakers before you buy anything and bring a cd filled with your favorite songs to audition with. You don't have to buy them at the store but at least you will be able to make a good comparison between different brands and models. When you decide which ones you like the best, see if they have a 6x8 version. If they do...great...if they don't...buy the 6.5"s and make an adapter out of 1/4" or 1/2" MDF to mount them in the 6x8 opening.

i have infinity kappas 6.5 comp. in front door & 6x8 in back door. no amp though it sounds pretty good, i would think if you ad an amp it would probably bring out the sound a little better. made my own adapters out of 1/4" mdf but the $ and time spent on making them you can go to bestbuy (@$10-$14) or somewhere like that and buy them.

You can get a small sheet of MDF for under $10 and if you have a jig saw and drill it takes 20 minutes to make the baffles.
