So I put the wrong oil in my tranny

yes the gl-5 could only possibly affect the gears, bearings and synchros inside the transaxle. It's not even like an intake where they could streach the truth and say that it creates more power so everything in the driveline is affected.

the redline mt-90 GL4 blew for me...very rough shifting. I bought oil from the dealer today...75w-90 GL-5 MT1...quaker state...the speed mechanic said this is what they use...i asked him about the whole GL-4 bit and he pointed it out to me right in his manual...says GL-4 - GL-5....its the 75w-90 that matters....thats what he said. Ill let you know when i put it in...for now..im sick and tired of my redline MT-90.

THat is very interesting Shag. All I know is that gl-5 didn't shift nearly as smooth as gl-4 for me I am intersted to see what your reaction to the gl-5 is.

dealer issued quaker state 75w-90 GL-5 MT1 saves the day...thank god. This is kinda wierd though being that we all have the same car. I got my redline MT-90 from SU, im sure they sent me the same GL-4. O well...im happy :D

Last month I changed my tranny oil to synth at about 1100 miles. And I noticed it didn't shift as well while cold. So this cold shifting had been buggin me till today when I decided to check into it. I had bought:

Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 synthetic extreme pressure lubricant API GL-5

When I should have been running:

Amsoil synthetic manual transmission & transaxle gear lube 75W-90 API GL-4

That little api gl-4/gl-5 thing is the problem here. Do not run gl-5 in the MS3 because the MS3 needs gl-4. While gl-5 is newer it can erode brass parts like the synchros in the transmission. So the reason that my shifting was bad while cold must have been due to the fact that gl-5 doesn't play well with brass. Great, so I just put about 300 miles on my car with gl-5 lube!

Just thought I would post to help people out if they have made the same mistake as me.

Careful Mazda may void your warranty now, simply by viewing this thread!

been running Redline MT-90 gear oil for about 16,000 miles and I have zero complaints. I feel the tranny is a bit smoother.

and I work my tranny damned hard. especially flying around a road course every six weeks or so slammin the shifter up/down just as fast as possible. I have learned to rev-match better braking & down-shifting into corners, so that helps cut down on abuse.

royal purple had this to say about there oil

My vehicle's transmission specifies an API GL-4 gear oil. Can I use Max-Gear?
Yes. Max-Gear possesses both API GL-5 and GL-4 certification. Max-Gear is formulated with Royal Purples proprietary, Synslide additive technology to provide the exceptional film strength necessary for GL-5 applications, yet it is noncorrosive to soft metals found in manual transmissions that specify a GL-4 rated lubricant.

I was looking at Amsoil gear oil the other night, it too said it was GL-4 and GL-5 rated.

What gear oil specificaly? I have have two of their 75w-90 oils infront of me and each says only one specification. severe gear gl-5 manual transmission & transaxle gear lube gl-4

our car calls for gl-4. the friction modifires they normaly use in gl-5 tend to be hard on soft metals (mainly brass)
