for everyday driving, i use the silencer...wonder if it hinders performance when racing...

discuss..

i have no idea dude, sorry but i would love to put one on my car, whether or not it does hinder it. my car is pretty loud now, even though all i have are injen cai and a mazdaspeed exhaust, but having u said that your car gets SUPER loud with not cats... im going to be waking up the whole neighborhood on the way home... something i dont want. i dont want all that attention, esp by cops. sorry i couldnt help man, but i say leave it in for now - chris

Of course it does...You lose some horsepower..the idea behind being catless it that you get the best flow out of the exhaust!

Think of it like this...You have a 2.5 inch exhaust...and you are putting on a 2.0 inch silencer (diameter of hole)...You are causing back pressure!

But on the other hand..with a silencer..you gain some TQ back! but i am sure not that much...When my header is installed..i will probably leave the silencer off..b/c i will still have 1 cat under the car..but when i go high flow..i will definetly put in my silencer!

Hope that helps!

Chas

P.S. yeah..that mazda speed axel back is very very loud!

Well depends on what type...light to light..on highway...

Light to light..i would think silencer in would be better...b/c you really dont' get above 70mph!

Highway or 1/4mile..i think silencer out! B/c top end is where you always expect your gains to be w/ a header!

Chas

I fail to see (as a fellow HKS owner) how the silencer would make that much of a difference when the exhaust itself doesn't. A 1/10 or two at best on the difference, even then that might be a stretch.

true, but there is a noticable difference once im pretty much straight pipe header back

I removed my silencer last week and the turbo seems to spool quicker, and it feels a little faster.

get a highflow resonator, thats what i did. Now my car isnt too loud without the silencer. Before i didnt like driving it without the silencer.

You have all these mods to help your engine breathe better, then you are restricting the airflow by having a silencer. I would say ditch it.

a resonator in the exhaust piping underneath the car does not reduce engine performance. a slicencer in the exhaust muffler does.

Hey paul,

How much does the resonator lower the sound (reduce the volume)? I mean, does having the resonator on and no silencer make it sound like it did with the silencer on and no resonator? Or did just the siliencer lower the volume more than just the resonator?

its is probally a lil louder then with the silencer in, but not too much. It did make for a deeper sound, and no more rattle.

Even my 52 year old uncle said it sounded real nice yesterday.

That's great. I do want a slightly deeper sound, and less loud... I will install one tomorrow then.

Thanks,
LOS

one day paul I'm gonna have to check out your car in person...I'm so envious of your ride ^_^

thanks a lot man. I am obsessed with my car myself. come down to the next nj meet and you can see it:D.

just so everyone is aware, all a resonator does is cancel out frequencies you dont want...most resonators cancel out the high pitched sounds....that's why paulmp3's car has a nice seep sound. a resonator does not restrict exhaust flow in any way

you mentioned that the resonator controls higher frequencies....is it possible to cancel or control this booovish sound coming from my catback? i already have 2 resonators but it still loud on the highway at about 80mph.

Have you ever seen the JIC resonator, or other resonators. the ID looks to be about 2". I had to search around for a resonator with 2.5" inlets/outlets and ID. most ID went to about 2" I had to go with magnaflow. I would think the 2" part would restrict exhaust flow.

thermal cat w/ a titanium canister.
get the air flowing but may cuase em probs.

if you want a non-modest jump in hp(8-12 depending on your other mods)

but 90% of all catback systems r just for sound and look.alot of these manufacts say you get a boost when you really dont get s***.
