Why these wheels?
I like Japanese motorsport style, 5/6/7-spoke, 2/3-piece designs. But I wanted to go bigger than 19in, and get something lightweight. To do all that was going to be $3-5k. I went for these because they're light (22.4lb each), an easy to clean 5-spoke design, and at $225 each they left room in my budget for nice tires and some brake upgrades (yet to bet installed).
Custom Paint
In a 5x114.3 pattern, these are only available in gloss black, which isn't the look I was after. I decided to try to paint them 2-tone myself. The paint is duplicolor silver and graphite wheel paints, then spraymax 2k clear.
Fit Lessons learned
Finish Lessons Learned
- 20 is not much bigger than 19. I was thinking the spokes extending all the way to the rim would make them look really large, but they don't look much bigger than the stock 19s.
- The additional 1.5in width over stock isn't much. I wish they were a little more aggressive. If they're still available in a few years when my powertrain warranty expires, I might get 10in wide wheels for the rears. In the meantime I'm looking into spacers.
- These wheels are gonna get rashed mid-spoke. I was hoping the spokes didn't arc much further outboard of the rim, and having wide 255 tires would protect them, but no. Eventually these will get curb rash in a very obvious way.
- Black center caps, chrome lugs, and 2-tone paint do not look good together. Gonna have to paint those caps at least.
- I put more care into finishing the faces, thinking they'd be more prominently visible than the sides of the spokes. But now I see the spoke sides are just as visible as the faces, and would also benefit from extra clear wet-sanded flat.
- This was my first time using a 2k clear. It's awesome stuff, way better than the clears I'm used to. But next time I need to budget more for it. I went through 4 $18 cans, and would've used more if I were trying to go thick on the spoke sides also.
- Duplicolor wheel spray paint works really well for a DIY rattlecan. But, factory coatings with effect layers are definitely better. I know, duh. Mine don't look bad, but they don't have the same depth and glow of wheels I see on nice Nissans and Lexuses. Before starting, I was quoted $250/wheel by a local shop for a hyper silver paint job. I thought that was ridiculous at the time, but now, yeah, that sounds about right.

I’m considering the exact same combo. Are your wheels black or gunmetal? I am hoping for gunmetal because that looks amazing. The tirerack.com visualizer shows the gunmetal as much lighter color. Also, how’s the ride and handling compared to the stock 19” tire and wheel combo? Thanks!!2020 sig' with 18x8.5 +45 Enkei TFR 245/55/18 Falken Ziex ZE960. Thx! The color is Matte Dark Gunmetal. IMO the 245/55/18 Falken Ziex ZE960 tires, which are Ultra Performance All Seasons, feel slightly firmer, more performance oriented with less slop but a tiny bit noisier than the OEM 225/55/19 Toyo A36, which are touring all-seasons. your choice in brand and model of tire will determine the ride comfort and noise and handling.I’m considering the exact same combo. I love this look from the rear mate, thats the stance that i would like. I have the same wheel and tyre setup, but the only difference is that i have a the facelift 2016 with ET50. You have a 5mm negative offset then mine. See pic attached.Painted the center caps silver. Made a bigger impact than I expe
Also added 20mm spacers in the back

NOW I'm ready to pick up the kids from daycare.
I have a 21 CX-5 GTR with the stock 19” wheels but during washing/waxing it I noticed that the lug nut holes were not fully spray painted and there were some blemishing to it. Seems to me its poor/bad paint job. Also I heard it was hand polished or something like that, is this normal?
I got the 2021 cx-5 GRR new on June 2021 but anyways its no biggy but just curious if other people has same paint job on the wheels. If others people’s 19” wheels have same paint job then I guess its normal lol.Normal IMO. The blemish on the spoke might be a minor manufacturing defect, but it could also be from normal driving. I haven't heard anything about any special finishing process, as far as I know it's just your run-of-the-mill wheel paint and clearcoat.
I wouldn't call that a poor paint job at all, but if you're concerned, take it to your local Mazda dealer and voice your concerns while you're still under warranty. Best case scenario, they swap a wheel from one of the other cars on the lot for your wheel.
Hi GuysSSW Ultimate 20” 8.5J et45 with 255/45/20 RADAR DIMAX R8+ tyres
Just got washed today
Wheels still looks abit narrow for me, I see 275/40/20 is in line with the speedo by 1.5%, but the real issue is
1) will a 275 fit on a 8.5j
2) will it rub
3) has anyone fit it on 8.5j rim
Hi Guys
Just wanted some opinions on adding hub centric spacers to my current setup. I would like to add a 5mm spacer in front and 20mm in the rear.
Anyone think it either to little or too much in front on rear. For me i think it would sit just right
Thanks for your input sm1ke. Are you saying it will not be safe turning at higher speeds or will it be not that noticeable since its an AWD.Only thing I would note is that it might change the way the car handles around turns slightly. Aside from that, if you think it would look good, go for it!

If it's not that much of an issue and it's more for the look then I'm more than happy to do it.
Thank you sir!Oh it will still be safe for sure. Just wanted to mention that it might slightly affect the way the car feels around a turn. 20mm on either side may be minimal enough to not notice a difference.
Of course, you'd want to really pay attention when turning, at least for the first little while, to the curbs.
