In some areas Clear Channel the leader of radio stations has set forth to turning atleast 30 stations into Hispanic only stations. They have already done such a move in Texas taking rock stations, some with 30+ years of service into Hispanic stations. Btw there are somewhere around 40+ ethnic stations there already.

One local station here in VA, is DC101 that is supposely slot for this chance. This unlike perhaps some of the Texas stations in it is not a failing station. 101 is known throughout the Metro area for setting up concerts, fund raisers and sports related activites; often for free. Yet despite this they are slotted for chance, which also consist of firing the whole staff.

Whats everyones thoughts on this:
-Taking popular stations and converting it to Hispanic; or as they put it Spanglish stations.

I actually noticed this last weekend but didn't think anything about it. The local 93.3/99.7 was a "all hiphop, all the time" kinda deal and when I was putting some bushings on my car, I put it on and all of the sudden they're sending out love song requests to their vatos. Literally.

So we went from 93.3 being dance/trance to rap/hiphop and now some tejano stuff. WTF?!#$!$!@*&$

Let me add they also changed the other primary R&B/hip hop station, 104.3 to a FM talk station. Which has Howard in the morning, so I don't mind, and Russ Martin in the afternoon, which is also okay but then theres "All Comedy Radio" and some other lame things..

Sirius it is.

Yea did Clear channel by stock in XM or something. I understand that radio stations are based on market share because more of the market share you have the more you can charge for commercials and s***. But if they change DC101 to anything else, I'm never going to turn on AM/FM again!

its simple money......more ppl listen to hispanic music then rock....which would u prefer for ur station ???....texas i can understand...cus frankly.....there are a ton of hispanics there.....

Yes part of it is money to, but my god DC101 has to bring a good chunk in for them.
Plus they also started this recently just after they got a new higher up rep who is Hispanic and he promised to being more variety. Which is cool, if they want to fine but don't just start knocking stations that lots of people listen to. In DC101s case they are a huge stable to his area with lots of history, much of this cause of the current staff.

It's happening in Houston, too. Rock 101 has been slain by the Tejanicans. It's like Santa Anna is finally getting his revenge...

All they have to do is go to the FCC and say we want to start a spanish speaking station and clear channel can get the okay and atart one on another channel. Funny Tampa has alot of spanish culture and no Spanish channels. Makes you wonder.

I want English speaking channel from england. Whats up chap. Going on a left today. Get your cup of tea and fig newton we are playing some 2 pac featuring Jay z bloody old mate.......

One of our Bay Area rock stations, KSJO, which has been on the air since the '70's, just changed formats about a week ago. Guess what they play now?

Titanium, you made me think: Did Clear Channel buy stock in XM and/or Sirius? If so, that would explain why it's getting tougher and tougher to find good, free music.

But far as the topic goes on how you decide which ethnic group gets a station; money. And that money plays into the what the culture makeup is of the surrounding listening area. You will start seeing more Hispanic venues poping up since they are the largest group population right now.

Yeah, I keep hearing Elliot mentioning a format change. That's gonna really suck if they change DC101. It's a good way to force people to get sirius or XM. Which, if clearchannel bought sirius to get it out of bankruptcy is a interesting business strategy.

I thought that was what the SAP dual broadcasts were for, wonder if such a thing could be done with radio or if the signal doesn't allow such a thing.

Well with many of the radio station coming HD (digital) it will be possible to do SAP. For example with HD or ED TV channel 5 would have subchannels based upon FCC request per station. You will have channel 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5 each station will have sub stations. I am in the process of getting our TV station to run 75% ED/HD. That is by Jan 1, 2005. 2006/2007 all major top 20 markets need to be 100% ED/HD ready.

RIP Rock101 - Houston Loved Thee -
