Service schedule & timing belt

Noob here. I have done a search on the subject matter but was looking for opinons on the Timing belt service and a link to the manufacturer's service schedule for the P5.

In regards to the timing belt, I have about 85,000 miles on my 02 p5, should I get it changed as the dealer is telling me or push it a little longer? My son is going to borrow the car for a 2,500 mile round trip from Vancouver to Palm Springs.

Does anyone know where I can find the service schedule ( I do not have the owners manual.

Thanks in advance. (drinks)

I think the owners manual states to get it inspected at 60k, and replace it at 105k. That is for the "normal" driving coniditions schedule. The "severe" conditions schedule may be different.

I'm not near my manual right now, but I'll get it and post a definite answer later if you haven't gotten one.

I would assume that you are in Vancouver, which qualifies as any area with a harsh climate. This would indicate a recommended replacement time of 60k, however, I know of plenty of P5 owners here who live in MA (another harsh climate) who have waited until over 90k without problems.

Thanks for the responces. I found the service schedule on the Mazda site and you were both right.
I think I will wait till the car gets to 105,000 miles

Excellent point. There are a few cars out there that can tolerate the timing belt/chain snapping, but most will whup your wallet hard for not caring for them. I was driving a Dodge Ram once with a 360 V8 and the timing belt let go (120k on odo). No damage done in that case, but pushrod engines are generally more tolerate of that sorta thing than OHC designs. I'll probably just replace mine at around 60 to 80k. That's actually a pretty good price too, considering it's a dealership.

BTW, getting the valves adjusted at the same time is a wise idea too, IMO.

Are the valves an issue with these cars? Never heard or seen anywhere about valve adjustment. Everything is hydraulic.

gawd, yeah, older thread, but i cant believe how much "mis"information is still floating around. read the owners manual very carefully, and you'll see that it say "inspect" at 60,000 miles, and "replace" at 105,000 miles... UNLESS you live in chile, for some reason. same schedule for both "Normal" and "Severe" conditions.

I think 105k is pretty safe unless you see oil around your timing belt cover. Don't forget to replace the water pump, tensioner and oil seals while you have it apart as well.
