Sedan (and Hatch) Trunk Dimensions - specifically width

So I have a mazdaspeed3 '08 currently and now that I have a growing family and a pain of a commute, looking at the new 2014 mazda3's.
The question I wanted to ask is, what are the dimensions of the trunk, and not in terms of cu ft, but width, height, depth. The reason I ask is my speed3, while useful in some ways, is not in other ways because of the fact of its dimensions not being very wide. I cannot fit golf clubs without folding down one of the backseats. This is just one example, and of course I am busy (lazy) and do not want to get bombarded by a hundred sales guys to be able to do this myself.

So, the task for all you that are willing and have a sedan or hatch '14 mazda3, take that measuring tape out and let me know the width of the inside of the trunks, but you may as well post all of your dimensions because I am sure this may end up helping someone else out. I am surprised car manufacturers do not ever post these dimensions. I am also interested in how "true" these widths are because sometimes its a small opening that juts out to make it "wider" but not really usable wider for longer items that are big as well. Pictures can really help!

I did see another post on people posting what they can fit in their hatch, but I think this will cover a lot more answers when these dimensions get posted.

There is some info in the owners manual of the Mazda5 that shows how to load your golf clubs by popping off the side access cover in the trunk area...(whistle)

Mazda5? (whistle) In any case, I know about that trick for my speed3, still doesn't work for my set of clubs/drivers. Thanks for the tip on the manuals online. I read the manual, page 3-25, it looks like it only mentions the 4-door, and it has a disclaimer "NOTE Some golf bags cannot fit depending on their size"

So, that goes back to my question, what is the width on the inside of these trunks?

:)

Well it was worth a shot... (whistle)

If it weren't dark and raining I would go out and measure mine for you.(gah)

Evidently that is important for other folks as well if they must include the reference to GOLFBAGS in the manual. (RTM)

I poked around the net and could not find the info..just cubic feet...which for me is only helpful if you are filling it with water or packing peanuts.(poke)

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new golf bag that fits than a new car that's fits the golf bag?

Ill measure it for you tomorrow with a few pics. No one complains when someone asks if their fixed gear bianchi fits in the hatch...

Good luck. I measured the width at a maximum of 50". But the left side (drivers) has a protrusion in starting about 10" forward. This reduces the width to about 44". In this area the trunk is about 18" high to the seat release levers. It is highly tapered. So, it really depends on your bag size. Looking online, carrying cases run about 50"x14"x14". So, it really depends on the size of your bag. I don't golf, so I don't have a bag to try.

As soon as the 4-doors began showing up at dealers, I took my clubs to a dealer and tried it myself. They fit in the sedan's trunk, but only just barely. I measure my bag, standing up, at about 48 inches to the tip of the driver. I don't think there's any chance they'll fit into a hatchback. Your best bet is to try it like I did. Don't be embarrassed, the salesman told me they have a couple people a month come in and do the same thing.

Great posts guys. While I was talking about my golf clubs, it was meant to be a more general question. Useable trunk space is much different then specs that give cu ft.

I think to make this post be useful for more people, the general dimensions are good to know. I can imagine people with dj equipment, musical equipment, etc.. would be interested as well.

@CXville, do you own a hatch or sedan 3?

My german shepherd roams around the back of my hatch with the seats down. It got its first battle scars (just the cheap finish from the frame of the mirror rubbing off on a plastic trim piece) shoving a large, awkward sized mirror in there. I put a an electric pole saw in the back, angled from the driver corner and it didnt even touch the front passenger seat.
