Rough idle while parked (2012 CX-5 SkyActiv 2.2L Diesel)

Hi everyone,

My 2012 CX-5 SkyActiv 2.2L Diesel, 97000km, had a rough idle for approximately a week now. No dashboard lights.
(see video 2)
The rough idle symptom is intermittent and more noticeable after pressing the gas while parked, which can settle
to a normal 800ish RPM after 30-60 seconds.

Just need your opinion on the diagnostics and possible solutions to this issue

The RPM needle fluctuates rapidly upon start up and idle after one minute of start up.
Initially, there was a strong fuel smell and white smoke in the engine bay
(see video 1 of the location, though the smoke disappeared when I attempted to record a video!).

My local mechanic has performed a smoke machine test (EVAP?) and determined there was nil leaks, however he has replaced the fuel filter which
had metal specs/shavings and a blue colour in the drain pan (see photo)?

I received a call from the mechanic and advised the problem was fixed, however upon start up there was a rough idle issue again.
The mechanic advised there was no problem when the car was idling for 40 minutes in the workshop .
I was told to drive the car on the motorway for 20 minutes at 100-110km/h to flush out the system, which I did.
There were nil issues when driving, however the rough idle was present immediately after the drive whilst in park.

I was advised the next step would be to attend the workshop next week to check the fuel pump or the injectors.

I have minimal car knowledge and my worry is that I am being taken for a ride especially after some basic research on forums and youtube
that the solution may be as simple as:
1. throttle body clean
2. idle air control valve replacement
3. MAF sensor clean
4. Air filter

Thanks in advance !

Yeah, I would try 1 & 3 first for this symptom. Did you ask your mechanic if he tried that?

Hello,
I am not a mechanical person.
I am not sure if my problem was a rough idle. A couple of years ago the car would practically lurch forward after I was at a traffic light. There were no issues while driving, just while idling. Mazda could not find the problem.
After much research online...
The problem was to replace the solenoid.
Apparently, the solenoid has many smaller parts to it, so every part had to be verified. This system is at the back of an engine so it is not an obvious fix.
Problem fixed. I hope this helps.
