Requesting Fluid Change info

Hi,

My wife has a 2015 CX-5 Grand Touring. The car has 75,000 miles on it and I am wondering which fluids should I change. For the record, other than engine oil and antifreeze no fluids have been changed. Can you also please tell me how much needs to be changed for each fluid change. Please be clear about how much fluid will come out (and hence must go back in) vs the full capacity as not all fluid changes empty out the entire capacity.

Thanks for your input!
Jomo

All of this information can be found all over the internet and in the owners manual.

At your mileage, it's time to replace your spark plugs. you will want to drop the transmission pan to change the filter. That's all I can think of at the moment for your mileage.

Trans fluid and brake fluid.

Be sure the use the fluids recommended by Mazda. As for how much of each? You'll have to do some legwork on this site for that.

Definitely check the owners manual for your year.

Check ch. 6 - Maintenance and Care, specifically pp. 6-4 through 6-15.

I'd consider the following, at 75K miles, beyond the engine oil and coolant you've already addressed:

  • Transaxle (transmission) fluid + filter
  • Transfer case fluid
  • Rear differential fluid
  • Brake fluid (if never yet changed) + bleeding

The Mazda-suggested timing and capacities for all fluids are listed in the owners manual. It's about as close as one is going to get, on the exact amounts on your specific vehicle. It might vary a bit, but those specified capacities are going to be pretty close. (The procedures for such fluid swaps do, of course, end with ensuring the level of the fluids are at the specified level.)

If you drop the transmission pan (drain-n-refill proces), only half of the fluid will come out. The other half is locked up in torque converter.

The amount of times that we have all had to repeat information like this to people who can't spent 10 minutes doing some simple research online is simply staggering. mods @sm1ke I think you guys should push harder to keep thread topics less repetitive.

This is exactly why the site admins implemented the Resources feature on our forum, to make it easier for people to find important info, and also to make that info easier for other members to reference. Telling people to "use the search bar" or "google it" is not the best way to go about this - if anything, it can make users feel alienated and they will be less inclined to ask questions or interact. Usually when someone asks a question like that, it's because they're new here, or maybe they're coming from another platform like FB or Reddit, where repetitive questions are far more common.

In the future, please direct users towards the Resources section. It's still a new feature to this forum, and requires contributions from the community to stay up-to-date, so if you see something that should be in the Resources section that isn't there yet, send us a message and we'll get it added. Thanks.

Hello, we have a Resources section that contains plenty of links and guides related to the information you're requesting. Please click here to access the available Resources for the 1st generation CX-5, and use the search bar to look for relevant topics - chances are, the topic has already been discussed.

Our forums are much easier to search compared to Facebook groups and Reddit.

I will note that while the Owner's Manual contains a lot of relevant information, it does not specify a change interval for the automatic transmission fluid or the differential fluid. They consider it a "lifetime fluid". Best practice is to change it at regular intervals - again, these intervals have been discussed and will come up in a search. I don't remember what they are off the top of my head, and they vary based on individual preferences.

I have no idea for example if my wife's car uses transmission fluid, trans axle fluid etc for transmission fluid. The manual doesn't even list transmission fluid. Before attacking me and others why not look carefully at what is listed online..

Good reminder.

The Mazda CX-5 data is listed online @ MazdaUSA.com. The 2015 Mazda CX-5 Owners Manual absolutely does indicate the exact type and amount of fluids for the vehicle. Specifically, in Chapter 9, on pages 9-4 and 9-5, you'll find the requirements for the transaxle, transfer case and rear differential. And in Chapter 6, on pages 6-4 through 6-8, you'll find the recommended schedule of maintenance. I had pointed this out earlier, in a prior post.

In the case of the so-called 'lifetime' transaxle fluid, most people recognize that fluid chemistry changes over time, and that the only way to ensure the fluid's degrading chemistry gets swapped-out is to swap-in fresh fluid. There's also a filter in the transaxle. There are a number of discussion threads on the topic of the transaxle fluid+filter swap, with most people who swap it doing the procedure somewhere between 30Kmi and 60Kmi or so. Swap of the transaxle fluid filter, of course, requires dropping the pan and re-sealing the pan after the procedure.

The moderator sm1ke did provide a link to the "Resources" area for the CX-5. In which is listed a variety of write-ups "pinned" for general reference, including the procedure of swapping the transaxle fluid and filter.

Mazda does list replacement suggestions for the fluids in the transfer case and rear differential, based on usage and loads (ie, towing, mostly short trips, etc). Perhaps simplest swap is to do the transfer case and diff every 30Kmi and the transaxle+filter every 60Kmi.\

As for which particular FZ type transaxle fluid to use, Mazda does carry it's own FZ ATF, and other makers (such as Ravenol ATF FZ and Aisin ATF-MFZ, for example) do have FZ type transaxle fluids that some people use instead of Mazda's.

By the way, the remarks by Lazy regarding referencing the Owner's Manual and seeking out prior discussions' detailed suggestions were not a personal ad hominem attack on you. It was, instead, bemoaning how frequently situations like this arise; and the remark of "you guys should" was pointedly directed at the Moderator staff with a suggestion. ;)

The owner's manual for my 2016.5 most certainly does list the correct fluid for the transmission, Mazda FZ. Page 9-4 in my manual.

Have you looked in your manual? The info is in the Specifications section.

Before attacking me and others,
As mentioned below, I am not attacking you, and, as @sm1ke mentioned, I do not want to come across unsupportive or unneighborly to someone who is new to the forum and needs help.

Quite frankly, and with all due politeness, this is what I would suggest you (The one who is asking the questions,) do first. The information you seek is all over this forum and beyond.
