Rear making buzzing "WHIRRING" noise.

I know I've read about the issue here on the forums somewhere but cant seem to find it. I tihnk its the rear diff but not sure. The noise starts around 44 through 55 MPH, and its noticeable but not real loud. I can stop the noise by raising the EB a little. Besides the whirring is there any other thing I should be worried about as possible parts failure? Thanks.

I had the same issue as soon as I got my car. Mazda duplicated the issue, called the tech line and replaced the rear diff. I still hear a very very faint noise coming from it, but I'm not concerned about that. So yeah, take it to them and have them check it out.

pulling the E-Brake up a click effectively disables the AWD, so that means its your rear diff.

hmm, i get that faint "whirring" noise when under hard acceleration only, but quiets down when i let off on the gas. It isnt constant like it is for the OP @ certain speeds. Assuming its just the differential kicking in as normal for me?

It pays to do your homework

I took my 6 to the dealer and was told the "whirring" was aftermarket brakepads....needless to say I chuckled a bit to myself and explained to him that it was the rear diff. He then told me how much experience his techs had and got cocky and asked if I would like the brakes replaced with OEM and if it didnt fix the problem they would eat the $441.00 they were going to charge to replace them. Needless to say I jumped all over that idea and brought the car back to them two days later for the brake replacement. At that point just to be a dick I threw down a copy of the clutch TSB, smiled, and said my clutch was "awkward". I leave and not even 45 minutes later I get a call from the service director stating my car had been improperly diagnosed and was also throwing grease from my driveshaft. Long story short getting the clutch TSB, new rear diff, and driveshaft replace under warranty. (lol)

Batou079 it sounds like your rear diff to me. Its a known problem and can get louder and more annoying the longer you own the car. Just make sure you know your stuff because as stated above some service writers are douche bags.

ive had a weird popping noise from the rear end of the car when it has been sitting over night and i put it in reverse.. this ONLY HAPPENS when i give it gas.. if i just ease the clutch out until it catches there is no noise. So thats what ive been doing lately.. does anyone have an idea of what this might be?? .. thanks

I get the same thing sometimes, haven't been able to reproduce it at will, and sometimes it's a bit loud. I've thought it might be the emergency brake sticking in the morning, and releasing all the way when I start moving the car.

Mine also has occasionally been making a sound that makes me think the traction control is slipping or something. Happened on the freeway the other night, when I shifted from fifth to sixth a bit early while going uphill and the car didn't like it. The right rear made a sound like it was losing traction...somehow I doubt I was spinning the wheel, so I'm not sure what that was. Shifted to fifth and went about my business, haven't reproduced that either unfortunately.

thats going to be your rear diff. i had that same noise happen to me when i first got my car. needless to say i took it in to my dealer and they told my my rear diff had a catasrophic failure and when they drained the fluid from the diff there were some metal shavings. so they replaced it under warranty.
