rear hatch struts gone bad

I had a back and forth with MazdaUsa about when the parts for this recall would be in. They said sometime in April. I went to have a look at my dampers and saw the end cap splitting, see picture. I called my Mazda dealer today and told them what was going on. They set an appointment on Monday, they're going to take dampers off a newer CX5 and swap them with mine because parts wouldn't be available until May. I suggest anyone with an older CX5 go out and take a close look.

Ah this explains why they haven't called me back yet for the struts on my Speed3. Parts are not available yet.

I'm sure there's an equivalent out there somewhere that could be shoe-horned in, but it's a recall being done on their dime.

Do they still hold the liftgate open?

Ok. I get it now. If they were defective, that would drive me nuts and I would not wait in the dealer. They still work then yea, screw that. I'd wait.

My sons Mazda 3 had the same issue and actually was hit in the head with the hatch.

Here you go MADAR, I posted your pic up for others to see...

That looks ugly! I see what looks like the salted road spray has been trapped under the plastic endcaps, and the rust heave has actually split the plastic end cap!

Makes me wonder if they used struts from different sources. Mine are pristine after 44k miles and 4 Minnesota winters. Always garaged though (unheated). Is that the difference?

Good point, I see yours is a SHOWA brand...known for motorcycle shocks...

There is an outstanding recall on these. The last I heard they are waiting on parts availability.

If you would buy a set, from a car parts store, Mazda, wouldn't reimburse you?

I think I tossed the recall notice to confirm.

Mines are in perfect shape after 65k+ miles. Just waiting on recall parts to be in stock so I can get brand new ones installed.

My rear hatch got replaced when I got rear ended in 2015.

Now I want to go take a look at this...

You're right. I was wondering what could cause a split like that but forgot that rust takes up more space than the original metal.

Yeah, a lot of salt worked its way up there. I put on 70 miles a day during the week and the crap from the road gets washed up in there. The thing is badly rusted under the cap. Vehicle is always outside. If this is what Mazda is talking about then they need to light a fire under some ones butt and rectify their parts situation.

I always thought this rear strut recall is related to rusting hatch damper bolts like mentioned in this thread:

Rusting Hatch Damper Bolts?

Now it sounds like there're more involved than that.

Also in this thread,

Mazda to Recall 2.3m vehicles worldwide

what is the recall for engine problem mentioned in the Wall Street Journal? I can't read the detail on WSJ without subscription.

Hey guys,

Long time reader here. Purchased my first Mazda last year on St.Pattys day and I absolutely love it.

Just had this article forwarded to me.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/mazda-to-recall-2-3-million-vehicles-1472713300

Will likely be receiving recall papers from dealership in the mail sometime soon.

TOKYOMazda Motor Corp. is recalling 2.3 million cars world-wide over rear door and engine problems, Japans transport ministry said Thursday.
