Quick easy ways to increase horsepower

I currently have a 2003 protege 5 and it has the automatic tip-tronic transmission. I was wondering what are some easy ways to increase horsepower. I understand a turbo is the easiest thing but I do not want to put a turbo on it. I also would like some sugestions for an exhaust. I want something very subtle and not to noticeable but i want it to stand out. I dont want to be that guy with an automatic car and an loud aftermarket ricer exhaust. Let me know if anyone has any sugestions. Thanks.

for more horsepower, you can put bolts-on like header, cat-back exhaust,high-flow cats, pulley,cam-gear(dont kow if its bolt-on), intake. Then i think jdm camshaft would add like 10hp(from what i read,up to 18hp). for the exhasut i think there is a exhaust tread somewhere and people post videos of their exhaust so you have a better idea of what you want. maybe the racing beat would do it for you...you have all the parts at protegegarage.com

there are millions of tread on this kind of stuff so maybe it would be faster to try the search button.

STOP!

Take out your wallet, throw your: debit card, credit card, and any cash you have in there into the toilet, because that is effectively what you are doing attempting to make the Protege faster. Yes, there are people putting out awesome numbers, yes, it is possible to make the Protege faster, but it takes quite a bit of money, and in most cases boost, to do so.

That thread is full of people trying to make the Protege faster without boost, some have made strides, but not many.

Don't get me wrong, the Protege is a great car. However different cars respond differently to modification, the Protege responds like a champion to suspension modifications, not so much to horsepower mods. With a whole host of bolt ons, you would be lucky to make twenty additional horsepower. Not trying to burst your bubble here, just giving you straight facts. There are many things that are holding the Protege back, namely the poor intake and head design, it is just plain restrictive. So in response to your question, quick easy ways to produce horsepower, there aren't really any. My advice to you would be to invest in a set of Tokico Illumina struts and (insert brand here) lowering springs, people's opinions vary here, but Tein and Racingbeat come to mind. A rear swaybar will also make your car much more fun.

just my opinion but 20more whp would make the car a lot more fun too.i think 20whp is not that bad...

i agree, i've got the bolt ons, and i imagine i have the extra 20hp that alexelie was talking about, and ya, the car feels a little better, but in hindsight, the money wouldve been way better spent going for only suspension upgrades. each suspension upgrade i have, i can easily say it was worth the time/money, i cannot say the same for the hp seeking mods.

Here's your shopping list:
Auxilary transmission fluid cooler
OBX 4-1 header
Racing Beat cat-back exhaust
Underdrive crankshaft pulley
Medieval lightweight accessory pullies
Injen CAI
SLS exhaust mid-pipe- catted
Corksport JDM intake camshaft
AWR motor mounts- they don't make or free up power, the stock ones are just junk and probably need to be replaced anyway.

One thing you can do for free- or partically free: remove the VTCS butterflies from the intake manifold.

I too have the sport shift automatic, so I know what you're going through. Check out my signature for my mods and my Cardomain for the mods with thoughts and pictures.

I hit the dyno about a year ago with a SRI, Racing Beat exhaust, underdrive crankshaft pulley and 17" wheels and tires. I got 99.64 hp on a Dynojet. Since then I've changed the intake to a CAI, removed the VTCS butterflies, and added the Medieval accessory pullies. I'd like to revisit the dyno before I add the JDM intake camshaft and SLS mid-pipe. And then dyno again. Then I'd like to add the 626 intake manifold and maybe some sort of piggyback engine management. Then re-dyno.

It does look frustrating to me, I am used to v8 mustangs / turbo 4cyl mustang and looking for power from all ive read for the P5 can be hard but any hp added will be felt and to me its more of a challenge to make power from a small motor. Im still up for the challenge although I will be turboing my tip-auto. Someday building the motor and being content with the hp. Till then here goes my $ . lol

Adding power to this car is very hard if you stay NA.

Let me put it to you this way;

Mods:
Racing Beat Catback
High Flo Midpipe
SRI
Underdrive Pulley

You know what I dynoed at? 107.7 whp. I think stock is like 97ish. And that all cost me like 700 dollars plus lots of meals to my brother in law mechanic for installing it all for me.

But header creates noise...

Josh

as does any exhaust mod...but the entire theory of increasing horsepower is to get more air in and out of the combustion chamber...a racing beat cat-back would be a good option to keep the noise level down.

Depends... see below.

Actually with a 100% stock exhuast on the p5 other then the Thunder header I had on it. It sounded stock!

Actually, the best bang for the buck is probably a piggy back or stand alone.

Depends but I dont see to many people going that route with a 100 stock car.

I've been wanting to buy almost all the things you've mentioned to this guy but I can't seem to get my damn exterior and interior finished :(

I've currently got

Injen SRI with K&N filter
Ractive long tube header
Magnaflow catback
MP3 ECU

It is noticibly quicker, but still NOT FAST!

I'll soon be adding, hopefully, the JDM intake cam for a wee bit more juice
Then a highflow catted midpipe

should bring my total hp to 110. lol
