Questions about boosting turbo

Has anyone used a MBC to boost their stock turbo? If so, how high did u turn it up? Is it a huge gain? Or is it a waste of time and money? My current mods are in my sig. Any input will be appreciated.

Beats me, I wish I had an answer for your question, but I don't know much about MBCs. Quick question for you, how do you like your Turbosmart BOV? I was thinking about getting one.

Many have done this. If you get a dp with your mods you be at 18psi anyway though. I would get a standback and a dashhawk so you can tune with your mods. The stand back is also a boost controller so you can raise your boost. Plus if you ever want methonal injection(AWSOME STUFF) then you can raise your boost to 20+psi safely with the standback...

As for the Turbosmart BOV.....i love it. VTA is really f****n loud, but i run it in recirc mode because thats how the car is suppose to run (which is still pretty loud). The downpipe.....well, i wasnt going to go that far. My intentions were to just get a catback exhaust and not mess with the downpipe. I was just going to put a MBC on my car and turn it up like 2 or 3 psi, but i dont know if it will be "healthy". Thats why i am asking the questions. I am unknown to boosting a mazdaspeed 3 turbo.

if you do up the boost without the DP you'll likely be asking for trouble. some will also say doing a DP alone will cause you trouble...aka smoking KO4. thread could become interesting (moon)(drive2)

CAI and testpipe.... Your pretty close to your limit before you hit fuel cut. 2 psi max with an MBC and you mods....

Yeah post people use the MBC to hold 18 psi. After your tuned however there is no need for one as the tune does it for you.

MBC is a very bad idea on MS3

Just do some research using search button. All this have been awnsered by knowledgable people with lots of info.

Alright then, so a MBC is out of the question. Now for the next question....what is a good tuner FTW lol .....the CPE Standback?

Lol your going to have to go searching for that one. tons of threads on them.

You have 3 options: Xede Tune, CPE standback, Cobb AP

Standback / cobb are most popular

Very briefly standback is more expensive but a better tune. It allows you to customize and essentially tune yourself. Best way to go especially if you plan on upgrading your turbo.

Cobb is cheaper but right now they still dont have maps available for everyone. They have maps only for their products so if your not running EXACTLY what they have set, you will most likely get some weird a/f ratios / boost. They have however speculated coming out with your own self tuning thing but who knows when that will come out. Cobb is also nice because you can flash to stock very easily. Overall easy to use. Some people have their cars running great but others are experiencing issues. Im on teh same boat as you. Waiting to see if cobb ever develops this self tuning thing or im going CPE.

Man......I just want something i can plug in and not mess with it. I dont know jack sh*t about tuning so i couldn't do that. Its kinda hard to explain what i want. Im looking for something thats already setup to where all i have to do is plug it in and GO FASTER! lol they probably dont make such a thing, but it never hurts to ask.

I basically want to get as much horsepower as i can get without having to get into the technical part (a/f ratios and tuning). A bigger turbo is just out of the question. Thats why im wondering if they have some kind of chip or something that a person just "puts on" and thats it.

Well thats the beauty of the COBB AP. You just plug it in OB port and your good to go.

Only problem with it right now is they dont have maps for products that aren't theirs. Most people just run it with a "similar" map. Do some reading on the cobb ap.

well, i just dont know what to do after i get a CBE. I dont want to change the downpipe. What should i do next for more power after i get the CBE?

If, *if* cobb releases its tuning software for the AP, i think it will be a better solution than the standback due to the fact all you have to do is plug into the OBD port instead of paying 200+ for the plug and play harness on the standback. I personally dont have any Cobb parts on my car, except for the tuner, and dont really have an issue other than fuel cut. if you want 18psi you can run the stage 1 maps from cobb and be there.

u can manually turn the boost up, i woudlnt do it without dp and a fuel pump. regardless of your direction turning up the boost will only get you good gains without boom if you have the mods to back it (dp,fuel pump,fmic/tmic etc.) Ap or cpe standback is def the best way to go tho.

Don't buy a CBE for power gains. If that is the only exhaust mod you make, you will be disappointed. The factory CBE is fine until you get heavy into mods. Buy a CBE only if you want a different sound.

From what I have read, an mbc and 2 psi of boost should not be a problem unless you have lots of other mods. There are plenty of people out there who did nothing to gain power beyond an upgraded intake, a better BPV and an MBC set for a modest boost gain, stopped there, got a nice little bump in power and were quite happy with it. Mild mods the ecu can tune itself for. If you have an older model, get the fuel pump upgrade and reflash (assuming you qualify) to make sure it can deliver the needed fuel and you should be fine. Things go to s*** when guys get greedy for power but don't want to lay the groundwork to make it stable.
TMIC and a test pipe means you can probably move enough air that I wouldn't mess with the boost levels without a tune.

I'll second this... my brothers MS3 has a CPE intake, Turbosmart BOV, and a TurboXS MBC turned up 2psi. Anything higher than 2 psi, we get small cuts... set at 2psi is perfect.... and there was definitely gains, not too much, but enough to be satisfied.
