I am unsure about whether the 1992 model has a hydraulic clutch. The car has not been run for five years but started right up. The problem is that the car will not shift with the engine running. The manual is not helpful

any sugestions

Yes it is hydraulic. I have no clue as to what might be giving you trouble though. Sorry. The manual I have doesn't have a touble shooting section.

As APEXistud stated, it is hydraulic. The most common failure point in the Miata clutch actuation system is the slave cylinder. It costs about $50 to replace or $20 to repair. It's quite easy to remove and rebuild/replace. If you decide to rebuild it, be sure to inspect the bore for scoring or other damage (corrosion pits especially).

I've had both the clutch master and slave fail during normal use, so both are susceptible. Look below your clutch master. If there is fresh/wet brake fluid below it, chances are it's the master. However, I'm willing to bet the slave is the culprit.

if it's been sitting for 5 years, I'd beat it just seaped out. Try filling the clutch MC and see what happens. But as kcbhiw said, the slave goes bad all the time. it's a 10-15 minute fix to r-n-r if you're feeling up to it.
