Program the keyless entry remote? DIY?

I'm getting a used replacement factory remote to replace the one that didn't come with my car when I bought it used.

Anyone know if it's possible to program the remote to my car?
I don't want to have to drive out to the dealer and deal with them. That's a last resort.

Anyone know how it's done?

This is how to program the remote in a Protege 5

Hope this helps

I have one remote that works and a new one I bought off ebay. I tried the instructions over and over and nothing happened to let me know the car was ready to learn the key fobs? My original one continues to work but nothing happens with the second. The doors should lock and unlock when it's in program mode right? Nothing is happening :( Its a 2003 P5

Thanks,
Tim

check the battery in the remote.

Mine worked fine and as been for a while now. I put new batteries in them when I got them.

I actually tried that too, battery voltage was good. I did the intake manifold recall and brought in my keyfobs hoping they would just spend the 30 seconds to do it since they spend 3 hrs retorquing the manifold bolts. They said, it'd be a minimum 30min shop charge (40 bucks). They said if I followed the procedure and it didn't go into learning mode there was some sort of problem?

I have one keyfob that works fine....

When it says "verify that door lock actuators lock then unlock" does this mean that the car does this automatically to let you know it's in learning mode, or is this something I'm suppose to do as a step to verify the switch on the door still locks and unlocks the car?

Thanks
Tim

Still no luck :( My setup doesn't beep either when hitting the lock button twice, is is suppose to? Maybe my entry system has some issue?

Thanks you just saved me $80 for a new remote and probably 30min of waiting for the service department to do 3min of work.(cool)

And isn't it really fun when the car does the unlocking/locking sequence with lights flashing and stuff? I love it.
