Hi!

Im am wongering what are the possible engine swaps for my mzda protege 1998. I presently have a 1.5L twin cam engine.

thanks for the help!

mazda swaps

will the bpt bolt right in 98 protege i like my car and wana make it original so im not going to sell it but help with possible motors will be nice and where i could find them

3000? where are u buying from lol...

u can get a used bp shipped to your door for less than $500, then u gonna have to rip it apart, clean it and do all that stuff, then buy a wireing harness ecu and all that electronic goodies( sometime they sell w/ the engine)

best thing to do is sign up on imazda.com and talk with intruder, he just did his '98 BP swap and he know ALOT about mazdas

good luck

Go all out and drop a rotary RX7 motor. 2nd gen turbo 2 or 3rd gen motor.

Might cost, but you won't have to worry about losing to anything.

Way to answer his question, guys!

It seems your choices are: a BPT from a GTX or GTR, which it seems you'll need to do some slight fab work and will be expensive, or you can just swap the FS-DE or the J-spec FS-ZE (did I get that right?) Both FS's are 2.0l and you can get some decent power and torque over the 1.5. I recommend a manual tranny, though it's a pain in the ass to do if you currently have an auto.

I'm no expert, but this is what I know... hopefully someone not from the peanut gallery will chime in with more expert advice... In the meantime, search around here for engine swaps and you should get some good information.

So much misconception.

For starters, here's a nice read on the BP swap: http://imazda.com/forums/showthread.php?t=733

Now to rebutt your cost guesstimates. From PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.

built motor kit 1500(come on your taking it apart might as well)
You're right about the price on that. Building a motor can get very expensive. I spent $100 on a set of used OEM Miata 10:1 pistons, $150 for a 99 Miata head (needed the cams), $180 for timing gears. $300 for head work, $180 for new rings, bearings, $300 for block work and assembly of the reciprocating assembly. Some other misc things, but some of that is optional. Find an engine locally - $200-300 max, do a valve regrind, and a re-ring for another $300, and you have a solid engine for less than $600-700. No Z5 will be as reliable, and certainly not at this cost.

wiring harness 200-500(they're rare as hell)
Not as rare as you think. I found one locally, but they cut it up trying to get it out and ruined it. Then I found one on car-part.com for $100.

bp ecu 200-400
Got mine for $120 from a local dismantler. You know... the place that does all the work for you and sells you the parts at ~dealership cost... also consider that I live in California where everything is uber expensive to begin with.

drive axels 200
Remanufactured axles go for $60-$70 each. I bought new axles (no core needed) for $90 each. +$60 if you want to do a G-series tranny and need a half-shaft (used).

exhaust manifold 100(used)-400(mazda)
Came attached to the motor.

intake 100(used)-400(new mazda)
You need the MAF, the top cover and the air hose. The rest of the parts are identical. I got a whole intake set for $50, but it turned out to be for a Z5 (stupid people). Then I got just the top cover and hose for $60 from Mazda Albany Mazda. Or you can just go CAI like I did: http://imazda.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3

motor mounts 200 ish
Only one mount is needed if you have a 5spd. In my case that mount came attached to the engine. $60 from Mazda, or a set of Mazdaspeed mounts for about $200 from your favorite importer.

FS engines? No. This is a 2nd gen. Why bother? The BP has a ton of potential with stock internals.

$1500 for an engine and a harness is ridiculous. You should've told them to go have intercourse with themselves.

I did an auto to manual swap. I did an auto to G-series manual swap (extra work)! 2 of the mounts are identical in all cases. It was actually advantageoius that I had an auto because the F-series upper tranny mount is not the same as the one for the G, but the automatic mount doubles up as a G-series manual tranny mount. I had to buy a tranny bottom mount. That's it! The other difference is in the bracket for the passenger side mount, but it came with the engine.

I am a firm believer in over-estimating prices, but the prices I listed are real world prices and I honestly do not see how you could pay more for the components I've listed. Car-part.com is your friend. You also have to be smart and know how to search for the stuff you want. I wasn't searching for a harness when I found one. I did a search for engines and called 20 places to find ONE harness. Perseverence pays off.

This isn't a project that can be done in a month. Not unless you have a whole ES to work with. It involves a ton of preparation and a crap load of logistics, but to me it's worth it.

I'm loving the BP as is. I can't wait to boost it.

I can't pass judgement on the transmission.

Autos are crap, and I wasn't pushing any power through the old one to say that it sucked or it broke because of extra power or whatever.

The G is cool. All I can say is that the gear ratios are really short and it is great for acceleration, but I hate it on the freeway. Doing 80mph on the freeway I'm sitting at 4k rpm. I don't know if the F is any better at that.

That's freakin' hilarious. I started cracking up when I read that.(lol)

damn thats high.
On my car its like
60-2450
80-3100
I don't think I could take that on long ass trips. Guess if I ever do the g swap I'll be keeping my final gear. Guess that means I should get the f series lsd now.
If I get to boost the BP, I will do work to the transmission as well. I'd like to get my hands on a LSD and a taller 5th gear.
