DETROIT -- General Motors will offer a removable hardtop on the Pontiac Solstice roadster in the first quarter of 2007, supplier and GM sources say.

The variant is part of GM's attempt to race the Solstice in Sports Car Club of America events. To race there, an automaker must have a production version of a hardtop vehicle.

During a panel discussion at the SAE World Congress in Detroit last month, Mark Reuss, executive director of GM's Performance Division, showed a picture of a car labeled the 2007 Solstice GT. The photo showed the car in coupe form with a sloping, fixed roof.

Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson says the vehicle is still under study. "We're not ruling out a lot of possibilities," Hopson says. "We're going to explore some of those."

GM insiders say Pontiac would like to add a hardtop to its lineup to stoke enthusiasm for what already appears to be a popular vehicle.

As of Monday, May 16, Pontiac had 8,177 orders for the Solstice, GM says. Pontiac says it will start building the vehicle this summer.

Reuss said he envisions a hardtop Solstice competing for the title in the Stock B-class competition against the Mazda Miata or in the Grand-Am Cup ST-class racing circuit against the BMW 330 and Mazda RX-8.

The Solstice will be built at GM's Wilmington, Del., plant on the Kappa rear-wheel-drive architecture.

Late next year GM will start building an Opel version of the Solstice in Wilmington. The Opel vehicle will be exported to Europe and will not be sold in the United States.

I'll believe it when I see it. I have yet to see a solstice at a dealer, much less a hardtop

Thats because its not out yet.

ah yes,...more weight please!

p.s. I hope GM is ready to step into the roadster ring with the undisputed heavyweight of the world. the new MX5 will destroy it in the handling department and only the supercharged solstice/sky will out run it in a strait line.

I have seen a coupe of them around here, they are pretty damn sweet. Most likely the guys work at GM but regardless its pretty hot, its about time GM made a nice car other than the vette

i like it, although i will really like it when it gets the concepts supercharged engine

2 or 3 years I think.
You have to understand, when the car was first shown it was a concept car with no plans for production yet. After given the production go-ahead a few months later they could start the testing and engineering. You may have been seeing this car at shows for 2-3 years, but it's right on schedule.

I have seen a few of them around, and I can't wait for the high performance version.

I don't think the Miata is the heavyweight in the Roadster world. Its the slowest roadster here in the US. By all means its a great car I use to own an 04 LS. But we will have to see when the Solstice and Sky are on the market. The base Solstice will have 177hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. Weigh in at 2,860 lbs. The Base Sky with have 170hp from the same 2.4L.

The MX-5 is the heavyweight by matter that is still the #1 selling roadster in the world; speed and other items notwithstanding...

The '05 MX-5 will certainly be a significant step up. I'm all for more competition, though in general, I feel GM can still blow me..
