P5 PCM(ECU) flash questions

So I went to the dealer yesterday inquiring about a mp3-p5 pcm flash. They were cool with me but at the same time they couldnt help. basically they said that there were too many issues and that mazda corporate wouldnt let them do it. Also they said that they normally flash a "blank" ecu with the proper specs and not one that is already programmed. it was weird cause it seemed like i knew more then the mechanics....scary huh. Well any info on how this can be done would be appreciated. I think that if i could find a pcm/obd reader/loader i could flash it but i still need the specs for the mp3...some performance shops have the pcm utility but could i just find someone with a mp3 and flash it to a computer and then to my car. ALso could i keep my p5 specs on a disk for emissions purposes? let me know

not true, they are flashable, but you need to know the people at the dealership and its illegal on the dealerships part.

Anyone have some pics of the PCMs from the P5 and MP3?

I'd like to know if they are swapable and the number of pins.

I've swapped them a few times. I'd like to see if it's really flashable or not

It is easy to switch them...Flyin' Protege and I did when I first went over there before I bought my turbo.

It's an easy process to swap them out. As for flashing, you can do it, just need the equipment and the program. Dealer has it, but might not do it.

Ok well could a private shop do it if i got a mp3 to flash my ecu with. Or could i just trade mine for your mp3 ecu...?

If the private shop has the equipment to do it, they should eb able to get a hold of the MP3 program.

And no, I'm not trading my ECU...Nice try though.

im confused...
i thought that it was only the MSP ECU that whould be flashed...
so u guys are saying that the MP5 ECU can be flashed to get some extre ponies?
i whould apretiate if soemone whould clear this up for me. also why whould it be illigal for the Dealer to Flash my ECU(if it is posable)?
and what exactly whould this Flash improve on the MP5, becouse i thought that the MSP needed the flash to have the lag/ hesitation problem fixed, but sense we dont have a TURBO i dont see the point...

I swapped my ecu w/ an mp3 ecu..and gained that 10 ponies..!!

Ok here is the deal. I had heard vague inklings of this awhile ago and so i started to look into it. many searches and conversations later I have this... All the ECU's are reprogrammable. In the sense that if your computer is flaky...,like the MSP's or for other reasons, they can download the software onto your ecu. Now Mazda has a catalogue of all their ecu code that dealers can download and install. Now there is a data port on the OBDII which is where they transfer info. I have also seen and heard of handheld devices that can flash a ecu. Now i would think that since the mp3 ecu and p5 ecu are basically the same...except for advanced timing and lack of a ,VICS or VTCS sensor, the mp3 has the same ecu. Now supposdly the dealer cant do it cause it is emissions illegal and that corporate wont let them. These guys were cool and werent difficult but they seem constrained by unknown forces. However what i did get out of them was that it was possible...Just gotta find a place and i already have a mp3...which i think i could get the code from...hopefully. Now what the one sensor mentioned above controls i dont know i think it is emissions related...fuel maps maybe. ...correct me if i am wrong. This could really help me since i want to get HC pistons and i need a better ECU to do it...advance timing...possible fuel maps. Any feedback from those who did switch is nice....I have heard that the actual power gains arent that great but it would have a lot more effect now on my car especially with HC.

hey if u want to swap ur MP3 ECU w/ my MP5 one ill be more then happy;) ...

also ur saying that our MP5 ecu's can be flashed into an MP3 ecu(or have the MP3 info downloaded onto the MP5 ecu) to produse the same results?

You did not get ten horsepower out of the swap alone...I know that.

Yeah..Probably not exactly 10hp..but i defintely felt a difference...more than my intake or exhaust combined..

but ya know that mods build on mods..which is why tubo kits w/ CAI gain 10-15hp..

but Protege's w/ out tubo's w/ CAI only gain 1-4 hp!!

So you replace a P5 ECU with an MP3 ECU and get "10hp". So now you need to run premium gas for an extra 10hp. Pleaseeeee..... an RSX with a 2.0L has an extra 30hp (over the 130hp of the P5) with regular gas. Even if you get the MP3 ECU for free, in the long run it will cost you more than its worth, imho.
