P5 ABS is SH*T!!!

Well, we are presently getting approx. 20cm of snow here near Kingston (Ontario - Canada), and I experienced the crappiness of our ABS system. Anyone else experience incredibly LONG stopping distances? Here's the cure... take out the ABS fuse and voila: you can stop in a minimum of half the distance. I put on really good winters and they work far better without the ABS.

The MP3 and the Mazdaspeed don't have ABS, is there any differences in the brake bias or boost compared to our P5? I would love to convert the car to ABS-less... any comments or tips etc.?

the speeds have abs. the point of abs is to not lock your wheels up. so if it senses your wheels locking up, it will automatically start pulsing your brakes. people on here who know hwo to drive with abs in the snow loves it.

Uhhh, OK :wtf: I know how to drive in the snow, do you? I know what ABS does, but the higher the quality of the system, the more BITE it allows, allowing the NON-STOMP-STAY-STEER crowd to outbrake the rest of you... thus the P5's system is more akin to a Dodge Neons ABS than the SiR or Impreza.

hahaha.. that's funny. now i need to find that thread where people were praising the abs on the p5 because it was so much better than the competition's abs systems.

no need to get a sandy vagina man

i've never had any problems with my abs. but it hasent snowed where i live in like a thousand years or something

yeah, me neither. i haven't seen snow at ground level for me since i took a vacation up to the sierras. them there is some nice country. i love it up on the california side.

yeah, for our seasonal runs, we were a little concerned with snow as well... but even at 7K feet, there was no snow. guess if you ain't got the clouds, you ain't got the white stuff.

I have to agree with IchBinEinMP5. The ABS system in the Protege leaves much to be desired. Even standing on the brake pedal makes for unreasonably long stops. For people above flaming for others to learn how to drive..........

A true skilled driver does not need ABS and can brake just as well if not better than an ABS equipped vehicle. Not to mention, the ABS in the Protege is nowhere near the quality of an ABS system in an upscale or exotic vehicle. Hell, my truck will outbrake the ABS equipped Protege all day long.

ooh yea im a tru driver i got no abs lol. well only reason i want abs is it lowers my insurance dammit they had no manuel with abs ehh ooh well ill do without abs.

I didn't get the ABS (Optional for 02.5) and i have not missed it!

The brake system is *great* - lots of bite.

(I am also O*L*D and grew up driving w/out ABS...)

On my B3000 - i loved having ABS (even if it was rear-only) but for a empty truck w/ rear drums - it really came in handy....

So. QUITCHERBEEFIN' - if the ABS couldn't stop the car - the coefficient of friction must have been zero (nada) so S*LO*W D*O*W*N...

Peas! Out.

I live up in NH, and we just got about 1.5 feet of snow near my house; My ABS only kicks in occasionally in it, and when it does, it works great. =) It actually doesn't interfere with left foot braking, either, which is really nice. Then again, I have good snow tires, too. =)

This is my first car with ABS, and I had to learn to drive with it after being so used to driving without it in the snow, in my older cars. To me, it doesn't matter that much if I have it or not, but it works pretty well for me, at least.

Thanks mazdadan... was the P5 available w/o ABS in the US? I thought I had seen that here on a thread somewhere.

And I am not saying that the P5's ABS doesn't keep the wheels from locking up, on the contrary, I find the P5's ABS keeps the tires from biting into the snow... it limits the driving style. If you drive very cautiously (slowly) and brake very early...

And a few driving tips: when in slippery conditions try not slamming on the brakes... modulate your braking inputs to match conditions and use them to steer your vehicle.

I test drove a P5 with ABS before I drove it...for new cars it is not the best ABS system, but it is much better than a lot of older cars equipped with ABS...It doesn't pulse like a Mercedes or BMW, but it does seem to pulse faster than some...

But yeah, whoever said you need to learn how to drive before you comment needs to think about what he said...ABS is a safety feature, mostly for people that do not know how to brake in adverse conditions...The common consensus among a lot of drivers is "If the roads are icy and you start to slide, STAND ON THE BRAKES"...It was invented for that reason more or less...If you know how to drive you do not need it at all...I ended up getting a P5 without it, and I have never had any problems stopping in any snow or ice...you just can't fly around with it or without it in the snow...

Yes...ABS isn't standard in the U.S., it is an option...It is in a package I believe along with the side airbags...

Like you mentioned...with good snow tires...you do not need it...you will most likely drive even safer without it in that you will know you don't have an electronic grandma bitching at your every move...in snow when the thing starts flipping out, it doesn't give anymore control than if it was just sliding...you still can't steer when the thing is pulsating...

I have ABS but it rarely kicks in. It only kicks in when I need it. Just do not brake hard and give yourself extra stopping distance. If ABS comes on EVERY time you stop, then you are not beginning to stop soon enough and are hitting the brakes too hard.

I do have ABS on my P5 and I don't see a problem with it... my previous car was '00 Acura TL with ABS of course and the system was kicking in all the time under hard braking.... while the P5 only kicks in when it has to...
I wouldn't buy a car without ABS for a simple reason that it might save you, maybe not life but money, in case you hit something unexpected...
