Just figured I'd point out a good experience with a company willing to make a leather shift boot for the Mazda3. It's www.redlinegoods.com. Cost is $35, shipping included.
They don't have it on their website yet, but they will - the one they made for me was the test run.
They are based in Poland I believe, so shipping takes a little while, but the end result is well worth it. Below are two pictures. This is with a sort shift kit, so the look is a little different than you would have with a stock shifter.
