New member here...*edit* iPod Integration Module in 2010 CX-7 Information!

*Edit* See my post #4 here for helpful information about the Mazda Ipod Integration Module and the 2010 CX-7

Hello:
New forum member here, generally more familiar with Audis and VW's, but have recently purchased a 2010 CX-7 with Grand Touring Package, including the new 2010 mini-Nav and Sirius.

I purchased the Mazda OEM iPod adapter kit based on these part numbers and the information available on the Mazdagear.com website:
TD91 79 CFZA (iPod Integration Module)
C9F4 V6 029 (Harness Kit F)

Edit - The above part numbers are INCORRECT for the 2010 CX-7.
These are the correct numbers:
  • BBM2 79 CFZ A (iPod integration module)
  • C9FC V6 029A (Harness Kit F3'+Attachments)

I've noticed that the harness kit instructions appear to be based on the older model years, and removal of the dash center panel and radio was slightly different, but no big deal.

The part I'm stuck at is trying to tap in to the CAN bus for the harness. The instructions ask for removal of the information display module to tap into the connector on the back of it. Mazda apparently has changed this area quite a bit on the 2010 model and added the mini-nav unit. Does anyone know how to remove the nav unit and/or info display screen? Does it require removing more of the dash? Alternately, does anyone know if these are simply power +/- for the ipod module, and do they have to be connected to the specific CAN (+) and CAN (-) wires as indicated? If they're just power for the module, I could put a fuse on them and get power from somewhere else.

Here's my progress so far:

I've removed the (2) screws from the white boxes, and tried removing the (4) silver screws from the plastic lens cover, but neither of these will release the unit, it appears to be stuck in by the upper dash cover, which I also don't know how to remove, and don't want to damage.

Here's a shot of the electro-taps. Simple wire piggybacks in red/black

Here's a shot of the harnes instruction manual diagram illustrating how I'm supposed to tap into the information display connector:

Any help that anyone could provide on this would be greatly appreciated. I'm really struggling to try to get this installed, and the 2010 differences are a bit daunting.

Thanks in advance,

CAN+ (CAN HIGH) and CAN- (CAN LOW) are not power wires. They are data signals. Don't connect them to power (12V) because you will burn the CAN interface driver chip in the iPod module. Those signal are for the iPod module to talk with the car stereo. Sorry but this is the only info I can help you with :).
I have another question for you - I'm looking for the location of Sirius satellite radio receiver in 2010 models. Have you found it during the dis-assembly process?

Have you checked the notes?
http://mazdagear.com/ipod-universal-integration-module---cx-7.aspx
IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. See charts for vehicle model application

2. If vehicle is equipped with Sirius® Satellite Kit or PhatNoise Accessories, the iPod Integration Module CANNOT be installed as well. (Sat Kit or PhatNoise already using Head unit Connector)

3. For models equipped with a standard Auxiliary Jack, an additional Switch Boxaccessory, P/N C9F1-V6-261 is required, to allow both features to function

4. The Auxiliary Jack is NOT an available accessory for retrofit in older Mazdas

5. Cannot be installed on a CX-7 with Factory Navigation Option

6. Not compatible with Sirius® Satellite Kit or PhatNoise® where applicable. If vehicle is equipped with Sirius® Satellite Kit or PhatNoise Accessories, the iPod Integration Module CANNOT be installed as well.

Followup - Fixed and Done!

So, I have got things figured out with the help of my parts supplier.(http://www.mazdaparts.org)

The day after posting here, I emailed them describing my problem and for some assistance, and within 15 minutes received a phone call.

Unfortunately, it turns out that the parts I had received from the supplier were incorrect, and that Mazda has revised the iPod Integration chart for their models. When the correct harness and module are used, the instructions are specific to the 2010 CX-7.

There is A LOT of confusion for the dealers, all the way up to the regional Mazda Reps about the iPod Integration Module applicability in the CX-7. Essentially it comes down to this: If you have the 7-inch (larger) NAV screen system, it is NOT compatible. Based on the chart below, I believe the rest of the CX-7 lineup can use the module, but the correct parts must be ordered.

The correct part numbers for the 2010 CX-7 Mazda iPod Integration Module are:
  • BBM2 79 CFZ A (iPod integration module)
  • C9FC V6 029A (Harness Kit F3'+Attachments)

Installation impressions in my 2010 CX-7 GT (with mini-Nav and Sirius:)
A LOT of interior trim removal, including almost all of the lower panels on both the driver and passenger side, partial removal of the the center console between the seats, and removing the driver's gauge cluster. In general, the clips, snaps and screws were all as outlined in the Mazda instructions. I think all but three of the screws were identical, which was also helpful.

I worked slowly to make sure I didn't mess up my interior panels, and I'm not a car tech. I probably spent about 8 hours on the module installation.

I could probably have saved a little time by not removing the passenger side glovebox and lower panels. The instructions indicate to route the iPod connection cable to the glovebox. I chose instead to route it down the console tunnel and put it in the center console bin near the auxiliary port.
I drilled a hole and passed the cable through a rubber grommet in the console wall.

Usage Impressions:
In the 2010 CX-7, the smaller NAV screen doubles as an information display. The iPod integration module uses this screen as well as the orange one-line display screen. It's very slick, as I can see artist, album and song title all at once. Sound quality is also excellent.

Compatibility:
The application guide indicates that the module is compatible with almost every other iPod out there except Gen1/Gen2 and iPod Shuffle units. It lists that the module is NOT compatible with the iPhone or iPhone 3g. I can verify that this is only partially true. Both iPhone models do work with the adapter, but when they are plugged in, a message comes up on the iPhone screen indicating that the accessory is not made to work with the iPhone, and the user is given the option to turn on airplane mode. The iPhone does charge, and music playback through the adapter works just like any other iPod. I understand there is likely a risk of some audio interference being generated from the cellular radio in the iphone, but it's nice to find that it is mostly compatible.

Overall, I'm happy with the unit. Mazdaparts.org was very responsive in getting me the correct parts when the mistake was identified, and sent a return label for me to ship the incorrect parts. I've reported back to them and they've already updated their website so the same mistake won't happen again. I would definitely support them again.

Here is a snapshot of the current (as of 2/22/2010) Mazda iPod Integration Module Compatibility Chart. This may help others of you considering the same application.

Cheers,
Steveo369

@Orakul:
I did not find any separate the Sirius Receiver during my installation (but quite frankly I wasn't looking). I can only suspect it's built-in to the headunit.

And:

The notes for the iPod Integration module are part of problem with confusion on Mazda's end. The 2010 change to the smaller 4" mini-NAV unit allowed for the iPod Module to be compatible. The larger 7" in-dash NAV apparently was not compatible with the iPod module (and may not ever be). Even the latest application guide still has that note, even though the chart lists part numbers for the 2009/2010 CX-7 with MID Nav. The whole thing could use some editing with respect to the CX-7.
