New Car Classified as Certified Pre Owned?

Anyone ever heard of a new car being sold as a certified pre owned? Only 25 miles or so on it. I'm a few steps closer to buying it. Dealer says it's a new car, no registered owner yet, but mazda corp required them to have a cx9 in their preowned inventory. Dealer said it still needed to go through the certified preownd process and carries the additional warranty after the normal warranty ends. Anyone ever heard of the manufacturer doing that?

As long as it carries the same proper warranty as the new one, I don't see the problem.
Check CarFax to be sure that it has not been titled before.
Just make sure you get some discount out of this ....

I did end up buying it.

I guess my actual worry was that something hokey was going on. Maybe it was purchased, crashed by dealer, repurchased, repaired, then thrown back into the lot inventory. I know, I know, just being overly dramatic.

I did ask for the car fax as well as the certified pre owned inspection papers. And everything ended up looking fine. Car fax report did say the dealer themselves took title to the car while it was in inventory. Salesman said that's the process for converting a new car into a pre owned car (dealer taking title to the car), and that converting it to pre owned was something the dealer had to do because Mazda corporate required them to carry certain models in their certified pre owned inventory. That's the story anyway.

Car still carries the regular new warranty, as well as the included extended warranty that comes with certified pre owned cars (2thumbs).

Discounts are in the wallet of the beholder. LOL. I think I could have gotten a little better deal if I went with a new CX-9 with the current $3,000 rebate (preowned does not qualify for the rebate), but the dealer didn't have another with the options I wanted. And another dealer wasn't willing to play ball as much. So all in all, I'm happy with the deal (I did deal it down a little from what they were asking).

Glad you like it, but that sounds shady as hell. I've never heard of that other mumbo jumbo about having to carry certain used inventory, so as the skeptic that I am, I think they just pocketed an extra $3k off you (assuming they "took" the rebate from Mazda when they "bought" it new from themselves, then obviously sold it to you for another profit...). Actually, it kinda sounds like fraud to be honest with you.

Dealerships sell program vehicles as "new" all the time, with plenty of miles on them.

Maybe the dealer missed a few vehicles to reach a quota to qualify for more discount from Mazda, and decided to buy them down themselves for sales as "used vehicles". That is why I said that you have to make sure you get a good deal from them.

I'm a huge skeptic myself. Before I went in, I did think about that too, that the dealer took the rebate for themselves. But considering the price of the car, it did make up for not getting the rebate myself. Depending on what site I'd researched invoice prices from, I either made out $400-$800 under invoice or just paid as much as $100 over invoice price with the rebate factored in (so it was like I actually got the rebate). It just depended on how I played with the numbers that I knew about. And depending on how I played with other numbers, they could have made as much as $1,000 or so off of me. Which I was ok with since I could factor in the "free" extended warranty that was included, and that the dealer didn't have any other GTs with the tech package I wanted.

Certainly possible. The car fax report eased my mind about the whole thing. (But I did of course, think...hmm, they could have easily created a fake car fax report...LOL.) I do think I got the best deal I could get with all other factors considered.

Yeah--THIS is what I have heard of before. An "executive" model that the dealership manager drove a few thousand miles still being sold as "new" with a new car warranty. I've never heard of the other way around. Hurts you if you are getting financing--you wouldn't qualify for new car rates, I would think...

Yup, that was a big concern of mine. I had to confirm with my finance company before I went any further with the deal. It only had to be of a certain year and under a certain number of miles. Nothing to do with being first or second registered owner. So I was good.
