turbo colts, looking for a p5
I am currently looking to buy an 03 P5, with the upgraded stereo, I have only so far seen one with the tweeters and 6disk changer, but no spare tire sub.

From what i have read, there was an option of a sub? I have yet to see one.

Or was that only an american option? Not available on Canadian vehicles.

Also, i notice up here in Canada, the 03's have the dark bezelled headlights, as opposed to the too shiny chrome headlights on the 02 models.

I would like to buy a protege 5 with a decent enough stereo. I really want to keep this car stock, unlike all my previous cars and trucks.
IM choosing the p5 for the wife cuz in case its not quick enuff after some time, i can make it quicker easy and cheap.

So , pics please of a factory subwoofer, or even a scan of a dealer brochure/catalogue of the specs for stereo.

I believe the spare tire sub is a US option only; here's a shot of mine ...

I'm not sure how it was in Canada, but it was standard in all 2003.5 US vehicles IIRC (those built later in 2003). The standard roofrack became an option and it was replaced with the standard spare-tire subwoofer.

I'm new to the P5, so you'll have to get other's opinions to verify, but I get the impression the only "easy and cheap" way to make it quick is a turbo.

You may be new, but everything you said is correct. :D

Damn, we canadians always get stiffed, just like with the evo8's!!

Of course a turbo is the only option i would go with!!! to be honest, there is no such thing as cheap and quick, i was just relatively speaking.

Its gonna be hard going from a quick turbo 4 to a NA 4.
I do like the handling and looks of the P5. Our choice was between the p5 and a new Honda FIT. We need something cheap and easy to maintain and good on gas with enough cargo space in case we have a kid in the near future.
I have a a couple of spare dsm turbo's and i have a bunch of parts to make a p5 turbo, only if need be. All i would need to really buy would be an exhaust manifold and an exhaust.
Stock internals should be able to handle 5-6 psi with proper fuel control.
Again, i want to keep my next car stock, even the stereo.

You know you are getting old when, aftermarket subs in the trunk is too much boom, and 15sec 1/4 mile passes are quick enough.

thanks for the replies so far, any Canadians replying so far?

Yup, 2003.5 P5 here with factory sub. I had no idea untill I cranked it up a bit and said to myself, "There is no way these stock door speakers are making that much low resonance.

i want some of them c-spec 03 headlights....but theyre too damn expensive. and i dont wanna attempt crackin mine open to paint them. grr (pissed)

I got a 2003.5 Protege5 and here in Canada there is nothing about a sub for the car. Even the official Mazda accessories brochure doesn"t even mention it. What a bummer! That would have been a cool option.

As well as the black painted headlights, we also got the factory installed sidemarkers for the 2003 Canadian models. Did the US get this?

I wonder now if the canadian model cars at least have the wiring harness ready for the sub?

I used to have a 92 maxima, which had the harness for the seat heaters, but that was never an option here, only in the states and australia it was an option.

I assume the sub is a an active sub, meaning the amp is built in. IF so, how many wires could there be for the harness, maybe three? 12+Vdc, ground and signal from the headunit? Can one of our American neighbours check this for us non-sub priveleged Canadians?
Also, can any of the American members who have 03's without the sub, at least check to see if there is a wiring harness in the spare location and vicinity?

Thanks in advance..

Looking forward to becoming an 03 P5 owner very soon.

Factory Sound Systems Suck

You don't want a factory sub anyway...factory stereo equipment sux. Besides, it's only a tiny 100watt setup.

Oh, I do want a factory stereo. Im tired of having to worry about my equipment in the car. I just want a decent sounding factory system. This isnt the 80's when cars came with crappy radio's.
Im seriously looking for a bone stock decent car from factory, which has good handling/braking, power(which the p5 lacks), and decent stereo and good looks along with fully loaded with sunroof and rear disk brakes.

So far, the p5 is the closest to meet my and my wife's requirements.
As for power, its peppy enough for around town, but if i need more power, i have a spare turbo and IC available. I have the resources for power, i just finally want a car i dont have to mess with.

So far, all my cars have had work done to them, except my current toyota pikup, which only has a K&N filter, 31" tires and an all alpine stereo. Still to aftermarket for me.

I want a virgin p5 and want to keep it that way.
For stereo, if i want boom, i simply take my colt out, it has the bigger stereo of my other two cars, same stereo setup in my old maxima hit 143db and 144db twice, with a single 15" vega sub. Now its in a hatchback. Its loud enuff.

Good old KISS theory, Keep It Simple, Stupid (pardon my french).

I understand what you are getting at, but what my point is that you are going to end up spending an extra $500 dollars or so on top of whatever you get the car for just because it comes with that wimpy 100 watt Pioneer sub. (It was labeled as a "zero cost" option, but the price of the car was $500 more than one without the sub) Basically what I am saying is this...Take the money you save on the sub and get some good sounding aftermarket equipment that will sound 100 times better for half the price and don't worry about keeping it bone stock. If you're going to worry about keeping it stock, then don't fret on the stereo...If you're worried about how the stereo sounds, then throw "stock" out the window, because to this day there isn't a car out there that has a factory sound system that is worth a crap or that can compare to the aftermarket world.

I have been installing and designing aftermarket stereo setups for about eight years now, so I know a thing or two about how much dealerships rip people off with what they sell as their "Premium Sound Systems". It's honestly not worth the effort to hunt down a P5 with a "premium sound" package.
