Navigation Takes Over Apple CarPlay when Entering Highways

Hello!

First-time poster, new owner of a 2025 CX-5 PP. Having an interesting issue that I also posted over on Reddit about but haven't been able to get much insight on it.

I bought the Navigation SD card after purchase from a dealer to enable TSR and to have as a backup GPS. For the most part, though, I'm using Apple CarPlay with Apple Maps for directions.

I'm noticing that even if I'm actively navigating through Apple Maps, when I hop on and off at least one particular freeway, the Mazda Navigation pops up full screen, replacing Apple Maps. It's not navigating, it's just showing me a live map of where I am along with the sidebar (Music). The HUD continues showing me the Apple turn-by-turn information, and I then have to go back and open up CarPlay.

I've tried disabling "Highway Overview" to see if that would change anything but it did not. Anyone else experiencing this or know of a fix? Is there a place to report a software bug like this to Mazda as if they were a computer software vendor? Thank you!

Do you know if TSR would then be supported on any trim level if you buy the card? Howe much did the dealer charge you for it?

I feel your pain! There is an option in the Navigation “app” to show Highway exit information, turning that off does the trick for me

Thanks! I think I did this after "Highway Overview" didn't help and I'm pretty sure it didn't help in my case either. I did though remove and re-insert the nav card after PGRChaplain's reply and it hasn't done it the last few commutes, so maybe that helped? I can't remember if I fully tested it after disabling Highway Exit Information as well before I also did the SD Card re-insert. But either way, I did leave Exit Information off!

I can't say for sure but in reading different posts I believe if the trim level has the HUD then it would get TSR with the card.

Dealer charged me $449 for the card (ugh). I know I'll get heat for paying that exorbitant cost for the SD Card from the dealer instead of going the Amazon route, lol.

I did look in the manual about TSR. It only works with a HUD so the trim level must have that. It only recognizes speed limit, stop and do not enter signs. So I'm not missing anything in my Premium trim level since I have Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze. Even though I'm getting older I'm still pretty good at reading stop, speed limit and do not enter signs.

You should get no heat for the purchase of the over inflated cost of the navigation SD card. When you're in a situation where there is no cell service nor downloaded offline map you have the Mazda navigation to fall back on. After the initial service expires the 3 year update cost is more manageable. Fortunately for me my local dealer gifted me a complementary Navigation SD card.

Are you saying The HUD displays Apple Car Play directions? Mine doesn't just the Mazda nav when when navigating to a destination

It’s either ‘23 or ‘24 MY that can show CarPlay directions on the HUD, I can’t find a definitive answer on that. And with CarPlay it has to be from Apple Maps. Android Auto will show Waze or Google Maps on the HUD.

'23 HUD directions only work with Mazda maps.

Dealer's $450 charge for the SD card is standard... (not giving you heat LOL). I considered it -but since I prefer Apple Maps for actual directions, I went the $40 amazon route, only so I can have an idea where I am but most importantly it reads the speed limits. That was my main reason for getting the SD card.
I recently drove a loaner with navigation - and yes there are differences between the dealer's $450 SD navi and the $40 amazon SD navi.... plus yours will be updateable :)

What are the differences besides being able to update?

I think colors were a little different. Brighter on the dealer version.
One big difference was that if a speed limit is 25 for example, but you are going faster - that little speed limit icon on the dash would have orange border around it, as if "warning, you need to slow down". I don't have this warning on my amazon version.
I only had a loaner for a couple days so can't remember now if there were more differences. I also did not use the navigation for actual directions, just a map view on the screen.

They should all be based on the Infotainment update version not the SD card.
