NA Miata Transmission damage due to flat towing?

Anybody have any direct knowledge of transmission damage due to flat towing? The factory seemed worried about it back in the day but I haven't heard anything irl.

If it's a manual (as all Miatas should be), it's probably okay. But don't take my word for it, if wait for more info. The owner's manual may address it as well.

Mazda recommends not (at least back in the day) but I think that was broad policy not technical issue.

Some corners of the internet say the layshaft might not be lubricated without the input shaft spinning but given that many (including me) do tow, I've never heard of failure. It could be that normal sloshing around provides enough lubrication.
