n00b speaker questions

I'd like to upgrade the speakers in my P5. Just something modest, not looking to spend much money. So here are my dumb questions:

- Is there a huge advantage to component speakers?

- If I just get some new 5x7s for the front, what do I do with the tweeters up by the mirrors? Anything?

Like I said, just want a decent upgrade. My hearing is kind of messed up and the speakers in my car seem extremely muddled to me. I have the Monsoon system in my Jetta, and while I know that's not a great system, it seems lightyears better than what I have in the P5.

Thanks.

I'm gonna hate myself for saying this, but the Kenwood Excelons that I just pulled out of my MSP could be good. They're 6x8s that I'm looking to sell for $100 shipped. They fit right into the doors of the p5, I believe...just like they did in the MSP. You can still keep the other tweeters you have, too...That's exactly how it was setup in the MSP. It's only when you strt to amplify these speakers with 50W or so, that you notice their faults.

However...I'm not gonna recommend that you buy mine straight away until you've heard them and other speakers. That is your best move, in all honesty. Go to Circuit City, Best Buy, Tweeter, or something like that and listen to a bunch of different 6x8s and 5x7s to find something you like. If you decide that you like the Kenwoods, then let me know!

Good luck!

Servo's kenwoods would be a good deal, Nothing at all wrong with going with 5x7 coaxes, it's just soomuch easier than anything else. As far as the sail-panel stock tweets, disconnect them. You don't need them, if you run them in tandem with another tweeter, the tuning gets complicated if not impossible, and will likely throw everything off. It's not the best of tweet locations anyway. If you want to get complex and do seperates, I'd make a plate that'll hold a 5-1/4 and it's tweeter next to it to mount in the 6x8 hole. Keeps them close to on-axis and give you better imaging. All the while looking entirely stock. That said, I went with infinity 5x7 coax's and they sound sweet.

well... i wrecked my car last weekend, and didnt get a chance to get my speakers installed. they are pioneers, 6x8 in the front and 6.5 for the back.. i'll need to get rid of them, so let me know. i paid 30 shipped for the fronts and 40 shipped for the back, but my loss is your gain lol.. let me know
