My Wild? KL Build

Haha..its not mine. It is a friend's '89 that I was letting store it in my garage..It is very clean.

Still, I'm jelly. I love the way those straight 6's sound. All of my all-time favorite sounding motors are 6 cyls. :D

Ok...big update time..

Since I last posted in here a lot has happened..

I bought a parts '95 Probe, with perfect paint/body..but a lot more miles on it. With that I:

Swapped body panels
Installed OEM UK Turn Signals
Installed '97 Probe GTS Tails (black outline w/ blank center reflector)
..amongst other things..

The thread is here:

Then, I tackled a few wiring issues that I had. I had a current draw that I found, headlights were not coming up, etc..While doing this, we re-did the engine grounds with some nice 2 gauge wires.

Next we installed a new NHRA certified Battery Box, to replace the boat battery box the previous owner had installed in the trunk...and a few mechanical issues were resolved.

This was followed by me acquiring all of the factory black panels for the hatch area that are needed to install the OEM subwoofer and sub enclosure (and OEM amp). I wanted a small sub, but one that would not take up much room..the OEM sub is perfect for this, and..it looks stock.

I them turned my attention to getting the car running better and some of the other issues that it had before I could get it legal and drive it around...this is where I am now.

I picked up 4 tires for it (the current tires are rotted/flat). I also just yesterday picked up a front lip for it from the UK (which I will post pics of and disclose when I get it mounted). I have also gotten the parts I need to completely redo the rear brakes (they have been sitting for 3+ years). Also, the MS got a firmware update, a couple settings changed and the car now runs much better, is much quieter, and will hold a steady idle (without any sort of IAC). I have also gotten my hands on the brackets to do the BBK for the front.

Lastly the ITB setup should be done in the next month or so as lots of progress has been made on it! Once the car is legal I will get it tuned and dyno'd on the stock KLG4 IM and compare how it does once the ITBs go on(no other changes are going to be made between dynos). The car needs the wideband bung welded into the y-pipe and the bunge for the IAT welded in before I can really do much tuning..but hopefully this weekend the tires can be mounted and the car taken to a shop for the welding details..

As the car sits now..

As you can see I have some body stuff to address..the remaining adhesive for the trim needs to be rubber wheeled off, and the trim on the rear fenders removed. The car has been washed, but not waxed yet also..

Once I get the ITBs on the car, it will go down again for a re-wire and mild wire tuck ;). Then it is off to have the oil pump mounted..hopefully, lol.

Very cool, the bay looks awesome with a lot of the stuff out of it. And of course, the missing VAF is sweet!

What are you going with for a BBK? 3000GT?

Ooooooh! Looking good, man! I can't wait to see these ITB's. But like Wes, I do love the VAF-less intake tubing. When I first got my JE-50 VAF and KL36 ECU I was like "WTF? How is this going to flow air well at all?".

Also, what kind of radiator is that? I had a Griffin (pretty cheap locally at Summit) but didn't have time to modify it to fit my smaller Protege engine bay so took it back for an OEM MX-6 radiator.

The bay still has a way to go..I didn't clean it up at all for the pictures, lol..but it is getting there. It is much easier to work on with nothing in it, lol.

Yes, the Reidspeed BBK. I have everything I need for it minus rotors..but I won't be doing it for a while (hell I have had the calipers for 3+ years already, lol) because I don't want the additional rotating mass up front until I get some track numbers from the built motor..and I cannot fit 15s over the Reidspeed kit, which I want to use for the drag radials..

Yeah..the intake is doing nothing but sucking in hot air right now, but I don't much care. I want to get some baseline numbers for the car so I can compare with the ITBs..but yes, the stock VAF is the suck, lol

Radiator is a Howe Racing unit, I do believe..I didn't buy it new though, but I think that is who made it. They make them for the KL, but they only make them to order I believe..

Hopefully the holiday weekend I can get the tires mounted, coolant in it, the WB bung welded so I can drive it around the block finally!

I hear you on that! I was so stoked when I got a set of FD's and then I realized they don't make any good sizes in 16's....

What size DR are you looking for? We had a set a 255-50-16s on a set of FDs that we used on my buddy Jarod's Turbo ZE PGT..They had some spacers behind them and Camaro studs..but they didn't rub. They did stick out from the fender a bit though...lol

Whoa that looks meaty as heck! I wanted to find some sticky 235/40's maybe 245/40's, not for DR's, but for road course, like Mid Ohio, but they don't make either size. Right now they have dry rotted 225/50's on there, which is a bit taller than I wanted for the 2.0, and with the spacers, they would have hit the fenders for sure!

Why a 40 series tire for road racing? If clearance is an issue then make some suspension tweaks or go to a 15 inch wheel with a 50 series or 45 on it..at least that is what i would do..also remember that r-compound tires are much wider than a normal radial tire..

I fully intend on running 245/255 tires on all four corners once I put 17s on the car. I have seen it done before, so I will, but that would not be a road race setup..more just a street setup..

A 245/40-16 is within 2% of a 185/70-14 (factory size) at 60mph, and within .2% of the 215/40-17's that are my current street setup. I was under the impression that less sidewall flex was desirable, except for off roading. Why would you want more sidewall? R-comps would be very baller, but not within the current budget. I'd want to get some actual seat time before stepping up to the serious stuff.

There must be some differences in fender clearence between the 626 and the PGT. I don't know how I could fit something in the 245/255 range on a 17 without raising the car or pulling my fenders. I'm on Eibach Prokits (for the PGT) and Tokico Illuminas. A 255/35-17 would be within 1.1% of my street setup, but significantly wider in the tire and the wheel needed to run that size.

Ahhh...road racing is different from drag as far as tire goes..a big meaty sidewall allows the tire to flex which is desirable in straight line acceleration...not so much in road racing, lol. I missed that you were wanting tires for that...

the pics I posted above are done with spacers, and ksports..I don't think that tires setup would fit with the tokico perches either as that is what I currently have on my '95..though I am ditching them for some coilovers..

I got the some tires mounted on the swirlies this weekend and the bulbs I need for the ones that are not working along with a couple other small items..I had planned to get the car going and driving yesterday on my vacation day...but I was sick all day (go figure). This week/weekend I should be able to knock out the rear brakes, coolant leak (at elec. pump), and mount the tires so I can take it around the block!

Well...aside from getting a airbag/horn for the steering wheel, the car is ready to go get inspected. I got all of the lights working, the oil changed, and a couple other odds and ends taken care of this weekend. That said..I have to tear the IM and rear VC off again. There is something very wrong in the rear head. I noticed a knocking noise coming from the rear head (I believe) and the rear cam gear is wobbling like crazy. It just started doing this on Sunday, so this week I will have to tear it apart and see what the issue is back there. I am hoping there is nothing wrong with the head, and if anything a cam broke or the cam caps have loosened up some...something along those lines..but something is very wrong, so I will be tearing apart the top end again. If nothing is wrong with the head, I should have it all together next weekend and ready to get the WB bung installed so I can tune a bit and get inspected!
