2003 MP5 Black Mica
I just bought this beautiful Black mica 2003 MP5 brand new last week for $14,000. I decided I would take it four a few hour drive on sunday. I stopped to fuel up and can you believe it, I turned the key and it did nothing. Luckily I pushed the car from the gas stall and I bump started it. I called the dealer on my cell phone, they had a car waiting for me. They told it would otherwise have to be towed to the nearest Mazda dealer. which at that time was 160 miles from my house. The thing I hate the most is that this car has 645 miles on it and I am allready having problems like this. I have been a previous mazda owner, who in the past has owned a few 323's. I never had a problem like this before. When test driving them I was going to try out mazda's new slush box tranny MP5, but it would not start either. At the time the salesmen commented that it had a alarm issue. The protege lx that I have for a loner is no where near as much fun to drive. Has anyone else had problems like this with your MP5?

Thanks

nope, well, once but i accidently left the ignition on and drained the battey or somethng, so i turned it off for a sec and retryed, and it worked, so since it was my fault i didnt give it much thought, and it hasnt happened since

wait, you got a new '03 protege5 for $14,000
what state do you live in, thats a hell of a price, I swear the MSRP sticker is somewhere near $17,500

I live in WI, The dealer I bought mine from has about six of them. They are advertised in the paper for around 13,950. This price includes the $2,250 rebate, college discount, and a dealer discount. The dealer was willing to sell me a red MP5 for the same price and it even had an auto and roof rack, but I was not impressed with that. I drove a yellow auto MP5, because the red one would not start. I heard another salesman that I was not dealing with say that the red one had an alarm issue. Do they all include the sub, because the only option mine has is the sub and that says no charge on the sticker? I sure hope they have it fixed tomorrow and they tell me it was something stupid, because I do not need a fix or repair daily because I just sold one.

The dealer I bought mine from had 66 Proteges on the lot, of which about 25 were P5's so I got mine for a good price as well. My point is, that with that many sitting on the lot they don't get started everyday and the batteries are draining. My guess is that your battery did not have adaquate amperage when you bought it and has not fully charged since. The other problem could be that it is brand new and if you are really going to have a problem with something that may not notice it on the assembly line, but you will in the first 1000 miles. The importatnt thing is that you dealer is taking care of you. Look around the board, there are a number of owners with 50K or more on their cars and no real issues. Good luck, I am sure eveything will work out.

It happened to me too! The dealer brought a black P5 to the lot (the one I bought) and when we went out to go for a test drive, it didn't turn on! He explained that it was sitting at the other dealer for a few months, so the battery could easily be dead. He whipped out a battery starter, and told us to go for a drive. After that, everything was fine with the battery... no problems at all so far.

The battery appeared to be fine though. The head lights were bright , there did not seam to be any problem with the battery. I had drove it for a few days. The trip that it broke on was a continuis 2 hour drive during the daytime.

Mazda changed the standard P5 package midway through 2003. The models prior to halfway through 2003 all came with roof racks.

You and I both have "2003.5"s, in which Mazda decided to eliminate the roof rack (and keep it as a $200 add-on), and replace it with a 100 watt spare tire subwoofer. In my opinion, I'd much rather have the sub than the rack, and who can't look at a spare tire subwoofer and grin (because very few other people have it? :).

Yeah, it was probably the battery. When you get it back, check the water level in the battery and make sure you charge it (either use a slow amp charger for a few hours, or take it for a spin on some highways for an hour).

Enjoy your P5; it's probably going to be one of your most enjoyeable cars!

I've had this problem with my MSP about five times now. Car's fine but refuses to start, even after driving an hour or so before. I've switched to a brand new Sears Diehard Gold and it did it one more time. Dealership tested the alternator for about an hour as I did the flash and found nothing wrong. They did give me a new battery, though.

is yours a 5 sp? it could be that the wire to the cluch has worked its way off that would stop it form working

That's what I was thinking next. Could be a faulty clutch switch or maybe you're just not pushing the clutch in far enough.

Two days ago same thing happened to me. Turned key - no response. Battery appeared fine. Bump started it and drove home. While driving, turned the key, and nothing, no grinding, just nothing. At home, still no response, just a clicking sound in the passenger side interior kick panel. I gave up and was walking inside to call the dealer when suddenly the alarm goes off. :wtf: I clear that with the fob, then the doors lock by themselves. :wtf: I unlocked the car and tried to start it again and it worked. I'm still not sure what the problem was, but I would guess that the alarm system was screwing up the ignition. Does the alarm system, if activated prevent the ignition from engaging?

That ones easy, your alarm brain is F-D!
Get it replaced, its triggering the starter kill.

Check the resting and at idle voltage at the battery, that will tell you if its an alternator or battery problem.
