I am buying a 2001 MP3. However, the transmission is damaged beyond repair. My question is as follows. Can I install a 5 speed manual tranny from a 2001 Mazda Protege 2.0 liter? I know the MP3 came with a short shifter. I would appreciate your input before I buy the car.

Thanks so much! I found a 2001 rather cheap. However, I was hesitant to buy the car, if I I was not going to be able to find a tranny. Do you have any other advice before I but the transmissionless MP3? Thanks!

yes, any 2.0 protege transmission will work for the MP3. and, since you have to replace the tranny anyway, might as well get a light flywheel and LSD. (if you can afford it)

Yeah you can. The MP3 didn't come with a short shifter, thats the Mazdaspeed Protege

yes it did. the MP3 and the MSP shifter are effectively the same thing - only difference is the diameter of the shift knob threads.

I thought the msp was way shorter? I test drove one and the knob barely came up past the pastic although I'm not sure if it was after market or not. But the mp3 does have a short shifter.what exactly is wrong with the transmission if it went airborn and scrapped real bad I would check the motor to make sure there's no damage to it
