Whats up everybody? Well last night I pulled the head to see what kinda damage I was looking at replacing since my motor went pop. Here are the pics, kinda shocking huh? ( http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/324030/2 )
I have been running rich and had no problems at all. Came around a corner and stepped on the gas GENTLY, and suddenly something wanted outta that motor! Well some of it got out in the form of pieces in the collection pipe, but the rest are still in the block.
Just so you all know, I was running a NX wet 50 shot on a throttle switch. Took all the precautions even though eveybody said it would be fine. And the shocking thing is, I havent used the nitrous in two months!!!

Ive searched the forum for solutions and found alot, but if anyone has anything that might help further or has been through this, let me know.

Oh yeah, and ther'll be a NX kit on ebay soon! If anybodys interested.

so you have not used the NOS for 2 months and this just happened, were you using the nos for more than 15-20 seconds at a time when it was running?

Wow - I know how you feel. I ended up realizing that I didn't want to be cheap anymore after I blew my engine. Next time you want a fast car - buy a fast car. Don't presume that you - or any other self proclaimed tuner god channelling the spirit of Corky Bell is going to add both a serious performance boost and still maintain the reliability as intended by the manufacturer (joke?) to an economically designed compact car.

I ran a 100hp shot DRY kit on a 3.0L motor for almost 6 months without a problem. Before you go blaming the nitrous, make sure there wasn't a hiccup somewhere else in a system. I've seen clogged fuel filters cause more engine problems than "properly installed and used" nitrous kits. Not to say you did anything wrong, but before pointing fingers you need to verify exactly what happened.

I had the nitrous on throttle switch, so it might be spraying about 15 to 16 seconds max, I ususally ran it just through 2nd and 3rd. Everybody (even the mazda dealership) said it was the nitrous. Supposedly what happened was the spark plug melted some time ago and has been constantly arcing in the piston. So it just finally crumbled and thats what you see. I know the motor has been running rich because of the a/f guage. By the way, the dragon has been gone a long time, I finally had some sence knocked into me.

Oh yeah, Im not talking crap on anyone. Im just trying to warn everybody so this doesnt happen to you. Because now im in a big financial hole! And it sucks! If anyone wants to run N2O, go ahead, but im just letting you know about my experience. I ignored warnings as well, but whatever makes ya happy : )

wait a minute you used Nitrous regularly on a car without checking/changing the spark plugs? Were you using the factory plugs? How many miles on them?? I think you just revealed whwere the problem was.

infrared, sorry to tell you, but a regular a/f gauge will NOT be accurate enough to tell you if you are rich or lean. Should have bought a wideband =)

True, but good, well-maintained nitrous kits are not the cause of all engine related problems. I dogged the piss out of my car and that thing runs like a champ. You win some, you lose some!

So did mine. But what would make a piston shatter at 38,000 miles? seriously? You can blame the spark plug or whatever, but its almost undeniable that the underlying cause of this blown motor is the nitrous. is it not?

I would say that the nitrous elevated a problem that was already there into a fatal situation.
