Microtech X4 Ignition box.

:
2003.5 Laser Blue MSP
Well since I have decided to go with a LT10 I am also looking into upgrading the ignition. The reson beaing i want to the the things right the first time around. Maybe its and over kill maybe not, but anywho.

I am now also looking at the X4 ignition box. With this I will be using the bosch coils. Now my questions goes out to anyone that is using the x4 on their fsde, what coils are you using and what wires are you using? Steve has told me that second gen wires will work, and im hoping that some of you guys might have more opinions on this. I am hoping that someone is using the X4 on their fsde.

thanks,
Marko

I run X4...
I have custom made ignition leads, and a custom mounting bracket that puts the coil packs directly behind each of the cylinders. Each lead is therefore something like 6in long, at insanely low resistance. Theres a pic of it somewhere in the NA forums where i detailed my installation

as far as wiring goes, i used all the standard wiring that came with the microtech, but am considering upgrading both the power and ground wires as they are very small given the amount of draw the bosch coils are capable of.

Signal wire shouldnt need to be upgraded.

X4 is a good upgrade if you plan to go insane..it'll guard against spark fade under high RPM or high boost situations, and it'll allow you to run a far bigger spark plug gap.

Thanks, im glad someone has the x4 installed. Could you take some current pics of your setup, whenever you get some free time. Thanks

Yeh mate, I don't have the car tonight, the fiance does, but heres one that i found that should give you an idea...

blurry photo but does the trick

my bracket needs rebuilding, bent aluminium sheet isn't strong enough, i'll be remaking it out of cut and welded 5mm stainless steel...once i get the shapes sorted out i'll post them up for you, but it'll be a few weeks and not sure if it'll be any help to you because i'm hijacking bolt holes for the JDM engine cover (which has bitten the dust unfortunatly :()

I like how JIC did this setup. I wondering which wires and coils they are using. Looks like MSD coils.

Since me and you are the ones keeping this thread going, he he, do you know or can u tell which wires are those. I will try and make that same or very similar bracket fo r the coils. Also do i need 4 or 2 bosch coils. I think they are sold in pairs for around $80.

you need 4

you're turning the car from a "wasted spark" 2 coils with 2 outputs each system, into a "direct ignition" system, 1 coil per cylinder.

the microtech handles firing order, you just need to wire them cyl 1 to cyl 4 correctly. If i recall correctly, cyl 1 is closest the cam gears, cyl 4 is closest the gearbox.

just wondering which plug wires are you using with your setup, and do you have any pics of that.

not sure i'm following? are you talking about the plugs on the leads?

I just went to a shop, showed them my coils, said "i want them like this" and came back 20 minutes later and they were done

Sorry, Im referring to the wires that go from your coils to your spark plugs. If I could find which ones JIC is using on their protege i would go with those. Sorry, to keep asking you all of these questions.

questions are alright.

what you are refering to are the leads.

Your best bet, when doing silly things like upgrading coil packs is to get custom ones made.

They cut them off a big length, to EXACTLY the lengths you need (shorter wires mean less resistance which means bigger spark potential/using more of the capabilities of the individual coil packs - my leads run something like 2000 ohms per metre, i think mine were measured at 400 ohms once the terminals and tubes were connected.... not bad, considering the resistance on the SHORTEST stock lead was measured at something insane like 3600ohms :P), and they do brand new terminals (the bits the connect to the coil packs), and new tubes (the bits that go down and connect to the spark plugs.

I got my custom made ones for $150 australian at a place that just does ignition leads....i'm sure there are places in the states that do them...just look around.

At the end of the day, you mounting the coils where YOU want them to go, no off the shelf part is really going to cut it.

Go custom and never look back :)

Im curious to see how your leads look like, and also how your whole system looks like under your hood. If you have time post up some pics, there arent many. I saw your thread when you were fabing up the coils and stuff, now i just want to see the finished end result.
