Mazda5 Rear Suspension

Hey there, I have an '08 Mazda5 that's giving me a rattling from the rear of the car when I go over uneven/rough roads or small bumps. I know I have bad/leaking rear struts and I am going to replace them when I have time and money. My question is, would bad struts cause the rattling? It squeaks and bounces because of the struts, but I want to know if I'll have to look for the source of the rattling after the fix, or if it might just be a waste of time.

My theory is to replace what you know is bad first and work from there. It's possible the rear shocks are making the noise but it could also be in order of probability: sway bar end links, rear inner brake pad spring broken, coil spring broken on lower coil or horribly worn out suspension link bushings. If your mechanically inclined most of these thing should be fairly easy to check.

I got down under the car and wiggled the sway bar and end links with my hand, but they didn't move. I looked around down there but I didn't see anything that looked broken. I don't know if anything is horribly worn though, I'm not too mechanically inclined

It's possible the rear struts could cause a rattling noise. Mine was making a rattling noise that went away after i replaced the rear struts

Depending on mileage and the condition of the roads you drive on most frequently, could be a lot of stuff. As mentioned above look at the trailing arm bushings, the lateral links, the upper control (or camber) arms and make sure the bushings on all of these are in acceptable condition. Be aware that the longer you drive on bad rear shocks the more harm will be done to the rest of the rear suspension.

I would also check the heat shields, mine are hanging on by a thread and produce a rattling. If you jack up the rear you can get to it and reproduce the rattle.
