MAM Thumper turbo setup

I am now ready to buy a turbo setup. I have been doing some searching and would like to see what people feel about the Thumper kit. I have seen Cwill's videos and am feeling this is probably the best setup out there. I am looking at building my setup to make 350-400 horsepower.
Thanks for any help.

Ooooh buddy, are you sure you know how much money you're talking? I'd say CWills car has over $13,000 invested in drivetrain parts alone, not to mention labor if you're not a top notch mechanic.

I dont know how much you know about cars (not puttin you down, I just don't know), but unless you're a very skilled and experienced driver, 400 whp is way too much for you. If you're not willing to spend $9000 to get your turbo and engine, aim for something like 220 whp. That's still plenty of power, it'll move you around pretty decently, and it's relatively safe for the motor, just be sure you put a very good, free flowing exhaust on.

At first I'm only looking to run 6 or 7 psi. The stock motor should hold up fine on that right? I have a Haltech already and 440 cc injectors. The motor is alittle out of my budget this year but I plan to fully build it next year or if my mid year bonus is good this year. I have $5500 to spend now. What I have planned is to buy the Thumper kit, the rod and piston deal $825 and an ACT clutch. Since I already have the Haltech and 440cc do you think I'll be fine? Thanks for the help

If you buy the Thumper kit now and the built motor later you are going to be VERY dissapointed. The Thumper uses a very large turbo, and at 7 psi it's not even close to it's efficiency (20 psi). You'll still get some power, but it would be sketchy for a daily driver. I understand the want for that much power, but if you bought the Sleeper kit now, you could have a completely efficines and safe turbo to run while you're saving for the engine. And then when you get the reliability of the motor, you can tune the Sleeper pretty far up. You might have some difficulty getting it up in the 350-400 whp range, but there are numerous reliable, daily driven Sleeper powered cars with 300+ whp

By the way, 440 cc injectors won't be enough for 400 whp. 350 would probably be the absolute upper limit for those injectos, 300 is just about right, but you can get a little more out of it safely.

maybe you should consider buying something like the Mental Addiction shortblock first..... then you can basically turn up the stock turbo to 15 or so PSI where it maxes out, you'd probably also need a clutch for that and i don't know what else. Then later you could buy an upgraded turbo kit.

And you say you're looking for 'only' 350-400 hp at the flywheel... but thats a hella lot for our cars.

Also, for that much power you will need more than fuel control, you'll need a full standalone that can control timing and spark. So tab another $1000-$2500 bucks onto the bill.

Yeah it'll make power. Once you get up to about 5,000 rpms, you'll feel a pull, but under that it'll be like driving around a honda. It will probably not be a very satisfying daily driver. Cwill is running 14 psi right now, and that's makeing a lot of power, but he's also a good driver who has a lot of experience with turbo charged cars and he knows how to compensate for the low end lag.

You can do what you want, but I'm telling you if you buy the thumper without a block, you're going to have a year of pretty miserable driving. And what happens if you dont have the money next year? You never know what could happen man, a year is a long time.

I still think a Sleeper kit is your best bet, both short and long term. You'd spend almost twice as much for a 375 whp car then you would for a 300 whp car.

By the way, since you said you only want 350 fywheel hp, that is about 280 whp in our cars. So again, Sleeper.

Stomper65, was it you who called and spoke with me today?

The Thumper kit is a great kit all around. Depending on the turbo you choice will determine the lag and over all power. CWILL is running our Thumper kit with a GT30/40R (Custom spec'd and machined by us). This is a very large turbo and CWILL produces 6psi at 3500RPM and full boost (13.8psi) a little after 4000RPM's. Allot of people say the turbo isn't in its efficiency range, well they are right. However a larger turbo will push more air, thus giving you a higher volumetric efficiency. (Typically will make more power PSI for PSI over a small one) Once it's in its range then the power will only get better. ddogg777 is running our Thumper kit right now and is only at 4psi (while he plays/learns). He is running a GT3037R and has no drivability problems due to the turbo size. When we had his car we had full boost (13 psi then) at 3750RPM's. At just 4psi the car feels faster than our Sleeper kit on 6psi. Emilo went for a ride and can tell you the feel at just 4psi. 350-400HP is roughly 295whp-340whp (about 15% drive train loss). Since you already have a Haltech you will be covered on the standalone. 440cc injectors will more than likely be maxed out anything over 12-13psi. CWILL will be showing his data log with his injector duty cycle any day. We have 2 people running our Thumper kit on STOCK motors and driving them with no problems. The Thumper kit will work just fine at low boost. It is designed to make big power, however it will be more than fun at low boost levels.<O:p</O:p

You have azian6er, ddogg777, dumb keola, robP5T and CWILL that post on the board running our Thumper setup. In the coming months CrazyCraker, 65racecoupe and 2 others (don't know there board names yet) that will be added to the Thumper ranks.<O:p</O:p

If you run it on a stock block, play it safe and keep the boost low and you'll be safe. The Thumper makes brutal power, but can be tamed to be a very safe and fun low boost terror.<O:p</O:p

Good luck in your qwest.
