Lost a tire to winter roads last night

:
2007 Mazda5 GT
So my new (to me) 2007 MZ5 GT lost a tire to the winter road gods last night. I don't know what I hit, but something slashed a two-inch gash in the side wall of the right front tire, while I was pulling in to a gas station. There's no visible damage to the wheel. Changing a tire in the cold (15 F) was really fun.

I look at this as an excuse to be rid of the OEM Toyo's, which at 17k miles were really garbage. I am putting on a set of Dunlop Sport Signatures, which come very highly recommended on TireRack. I will post my impressions.

That should be the first thing anyone does when they buy a 5. The Toyos that come on them are absolute GARBAGE!

The toyos are pretty bad, no doubt. I changed them after three months of use on my '07 Mazda5.
Has anyone been successful at reselling their Toyos? Mine have 2500 miles and are taking up needed space in the garage. Just curious...

I put about 1,000 miles on my new Dunlops over the past three days. They're an excellent tire, with good dry and wet grip, and a quiet ride.

That's the problem...you can sell them to someone who will hate you forever for doing so, or get a few thousand miles on them to try and get some value out of them. I live in Canada where half of the year you are on snow tires so they are taking TWICE as long to wear down...sucks crap, I hate these tires.

I might disappoint you guys, but I'm pretty happy with Toyos that came with the car. Not the best tires I've had, but not as bad as some you say. I figured since I already have a set of summer wheels waiting for me, I might as well try to kill my Toyos over winter period, but it looks like they are holding up just fine :)

Mind you, I don't like all season tires myself, I always have two sets of wheels (summer and winter), but I just recently sold my mazda 6 with winter tires on it, and cheaped out on another set for 5 :) I'll be getting winter tires for next season though

you were using the OEM Toyo's for winter driving???? I have to give you credit, you're very brave!!!! after the first snowfall I stopped using the OEM Toyo's for finter driving and bought real snow tires. That was 3 winters ago. the OEM toyos are by no means an all season tire! They may say so , but they're scary in the rain. I'd hate to think what they are like in deep snow!

Get some real snow tires, you'll never regret it!

Oh as far as the OEM toyos go for longevity, I have to give them, they have lasted longer than I expected! 3 years so far, though I think they'll definitly be done by the end of the next summer season!

haha, I tried that too! I thought it prudent to get some wear out of my OEM tires so I was going to try to really wear them down over winter. Lasted until about December 20th. Not bad actually. Then we actually started getting legit snow falls in Calgary and it was all over. Got stuck 4 times in two days and went and dropped the cash on snow tires. How many miles do you have on your OEM's so far dima?

I am at 30.000km and a lot left in my Toyos. Never had a problem with them so far, even with all of this snow here in TO. Nevertheless, I will be getting winters for next season (cool)
